Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the musical "West Side Story" based on?

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

The rival families become gangs in 1950s New York, and a brilliant musical score is added, but the basic story of the star crossed lovers is essentially the same.
2. The story of "Cyrano De Bergerac" was adapted into an 80s movie comedy. What is the name of that movie?

Answer: Roxanne

Steve Martin played CD (the Cyrano role), complete with an oversized nose, in a comic version of the story, with Darryl Hannah as Roxanne. It's worth watching, if only for the routine where CD successfully meets the challenge of telling 20 straight nose jokes.
3. The TV show "All in the Family" was based on a show from which country?

Answer: England

The English show "Til Death Do Us Part" was used as a model for the US show that featured Carroll O'Connor in the title role.
4. The play "Green Grow the Lilacs" was the basis for which Broadway musical?

Answer: Oklahoma

The musical, set in Oklahoma just before the 1889 Land Rush, came out in 1944, and was the first collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein. The musical held the Broadway record for the longest running musical for 15 years, and was also the first show to have an original cast album recorded.
5. A play written in 1926 about murderess Roxie Hart was most notably adapted into the Broadway musical "Chicago." Between 1926 and 2002, how many movie versions of the story were released?

Answer: 3

The easy one was the movie version of the musical that came out in 2002. A 1942 version of the story called "Roxie Hart" starred Ginger Rogers, and the first movie to come out was also called "Chicago," and was released in 1927.
6. The shows "Trading Spaces" on The Learning Channel in the US and "Changing Rooms" on the BBC in England are both based on the idea that two couples redesign a room in each other's home. Which of the shows was the first one to go on the air?

Answer: Changing Rooms

"Changing Rooms" debuted in 1997, while its US counterpart started in 2000.
7. The Stephen Ambrose book "Band of Brothers" was the basis for the movie "Saving Private Ryan."

Answer: False

In the Ambrose book "D-Day: June 6, 1944," he briefly wrote about the story that two of the four Niland brothers had died on D-Day, while a third brother went missing in Asia (he actually was alive, but had been captured), and that the three telegrams were delivered on the same day to their mother.

The fourth son, with the 101st Airborne, was yanked out of the front line. The movie was a fictional story about what might have been required to find the surviving brother. The Omaha Beach sequence was also based on the book.

His book "Band of Brothers" was turned into an HBO miniseries.
8. "Airplane!" was a spoof of the "Airport" movie series from the 1970s. Who appeared in all four of the movies in the series?

Answer: George Kennedy

Kennedy played Joe Patroni in each of the movies. Dean Martin was the pilot in the original "Airport" in 1970, Jack Lemmon was the pilot in "Airport 77," and Linda Blair played the sick little girl in "Airport 75," complete with a nun singing her a song during the flight, which was one of the scenes directly spoofed in "Airplane."
9. "My Fair Lady" was a musical version of the play "Pygmalion." Which author originally wrote the play?

Answer: Shaw

The 1914 Shaw play about Henry Higgins' efforts to teach the flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, how to speak properly was turned into "My Fair Lady" in the 1950s. A 1938 film version of the play received an academy award nomination for best picture, and the 1964 film version of the musical won best picture.
10. The TV series "Smallville" is the story about the teen years of which superhero?

Answer: Superman

The series is based on the idea that he is dealing with life as a teenager while trying to understand his powers, and also includes younger versions of Lex Luther and Lana Lang.
