Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following letters can be added to PAIN to get a country on the Iberian peninsula?

Answer: S

The Iberian peninsula is a part of Europe and it is mostly occupied by the countries of Portugal and Spain. There is another country on the peninsula, Andorra, which is a lot smaller than both Portugal and Spain. The capital cities of Portugal, Spain and Andorra are Lisbon, Madrid and Andorra la Vella respectively.

S + PAIN = SPAIN

P + RICE = PRICE
3. Which of the following letters can be added to the word RAN to get a form of precipitation?

Answer: I

Rain is an important part of the water cycle; too much of it and there is the possibility of floods, too little and it could contribute towards a drought. There is a well-known nursery rhyme that mentions rain and it goes as follows:

"It's raining; it's pouring.
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and bumped his head,
And he couldn't get up in the morning."

RAN + I = RAIN
4. Which of the following letters can be added to GRAN to get a British synonym for "thousand"?

Answer: D

In the physical sciences, and all sciences for that matter, a factor of 1000 is given the prefix kilo-. Examples of this usage include kilogram (thousand grams in mass), kilometre (thousand metres in length) and kilonewtons (thousand newtons of force).

GRAN + D = GRAND
5. All of the following are parts of a fish: dorsal ___, caudal ___ and pelvic ___. What letter can be added to the word that fills the blank to get the word FINE?

Answer: E

The parts of a fish mentioned in the question are the dorsal fin, caudal fin and the pelvic fin. The fins help the fish swim and along with gills are biological adaptations which allow fish to survive in water.

FIN + E = FINE
6. Which of the following letters can be added to the piece of equipment used to play a violin to get BROW?

Answer: R

A bow, often made with horsehair, can be used to play stringed instruments such as the violin and the cello. If a violinist was playing a piece pizzicato, they would pluck the strings instead of using their bow.

BOW + R = BROW
7. Which of the following letters can be added to a type of cereal grain to get a waterway which surrounds a castle?

Answer: M

If you add the letter 'M' to OAT (a type of cereal grain), you will get MOAT which is a waterway that surrounds and protects a castle from unwanted intruders. To allow people to access or leave a castle, a drawbridge can be lowered.

M + OAT = MOAT
8. Which of the following letters can be added to a synonym of boxing match to get the word ABOUT?

Answer: A

In the modern game a boxing match, or bout, lasts up to a maximum of twelve rounds but in years gone by the athletes would have to compete to a maximum of fifteen rounds. The winner of a bout can be decided by a competitor knocking out their opponent, by technical knockout or by the scores of the judges.

A + BOUT = ABOUT
9. Which of the following letters can be added to the word ARROW to get a synonym of thin and slim?

Answer: N

An arrow is used, along with a bow, in the sport of archery. Archery is a sport that features in the Olympic Games, and can be seen being played competitively in the summer time once every four years. The top three archers, or teams of archers, win gold, silver and bronze medals.

N + ARROW = NARROW
10. By taking the first letter of each of the previous nine answers and putting them all together to make a word you may just find the alter ego of Peter Parker!

Answer: Spider-man

I could have been a supervillain and asked for the hyphen but I couldn't turn to the dark side. Peter Parker appears to be just a normal guy but due to a spider bite he developed a superhero alter ego. Peter Parker became Spider-Man!
