Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where would you find a forelock on a horse?

Answer: On its head

A forelock is that part of a horse's mane that falls between its ears.
Not to be confused with the fetlock, which is the joint just above the hoof.
2. Which of these animals has a pouch?

Answer: Kangaroo

The kangaroo has a pouch in which the baby joey is nurtured and grows. It is located on the front of the mother's body. Other marsupials also have such a pouch.
3. What is that part of a cow called where the milk comes from?

Answer: Udder

The udder is on the underside of a female cow. It consists of a pair of mammary glands which allow the cow to be milked. In the past, most milking was done by hand, but now "cups" are used to extract the milk.
4. On a male lion, what is all that hair that surrounds its head called?

Answer: Mane

Only adult male lions have such a distinctive feature. Among other things, the lion's mane is used to attract a mate. Other animals with manes include horses and zebras.
5. What is that thing that hangs down from a turkey's neck?

Answer: Wattle

The turkey's wattle is also thought to be used for mating purposes. Although the turkey's wattle is the most famous, other bird species also have them. Some goats also have a fleshy growth around their neck, also called a wattle.
6. What are those things on the head of a deer?

Answer: Antlers

Antlers are a feature unique to deer, moose and elks. Usually only the male of the species grow antlers. But some female caribou and reindeer also have smaller antlers.
7. What are those big things in an elephant's mouth, made of ivory?

Answer: Tusks

Other animals with tusks include walruses, wild boars, and the marine mammal called a narwhal. It has been the illegal poaching of elephant tusks that has led to their decline and near extinction.
8. What does a turtle carry on its back?

Answer: Shell

The turtle's shell is important for both protecting the turtle and for identifying which species it comes from. For some people, turtle shell soup is a delicacy.
9. Many animals have long hairs growing around the sides of their mouths. What are they called?

Answer: Whiskers

The technical name for them is vibrissae. For many animals with whiskers, they are thought to aid in navigating at night and finding food.
10. What are those slits that some fish have on their sides that allow them to breathe?

Answer: Gills

The gills bring in oxygen from the water and then release carbon dioxide. Gills are also found in mollusks and crustaceans.
