Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For some reason I am often called "king of the jungle", even though I don't live there. What animal am I?

Answer: lion

Lions are found on the plains and grasslands of Africa. They prefer to hunt in tall grass or woods, and are never found actually living in jungles.
2. I can be found in the jungles of the Amazon River. My unusually dark coat makes me hard to see at night. What large South American cat am I?

Answer: jaguar

Black panther is a common name given to both the jaguar of South America and the leopard of Africa and Asia when they have a dark coat, instead of sporting the light coat with black markings that are usual in both animals.
3. Known as a voracious eater of meat, what tropical fish has a fearsome reputation, and enjoys living in tropical waters like the Amazon River?

Answer: piranha

Many piranhas are actually omnivores, meaning they eat plants as well as other fish. A piranha's natural habitat is the Amazon Rainforest, but some have been found on the other side of the world due to illegal poaching.
4. In a jungle, you may find all sorts of serpents slithering on the ground or around trees. What is another name for a serpent?

Answer: snake

Most jungle snakes use some kind of poison to kill prey, and a few species that aren't poisonous try to look like those that are. Some of the deadliest snakes live in jungles, so be very careful!
5. Usually thought of as only living in grasslands, what extremely large animal can also be found dwelling in the jungles of Africa and Asia?

Answer: elephant

Named the African forest elephant, they are much smaller and darker than the more common African elephant and African bush elephant. They live mainly in the rainforests around the Congo River. Poaching has hurt the elephant population so much that these elephants could be extinct in ten to twenty years.
6. The most numerous insect in any jungle is almost totally blind and must follow scent trails to move around. A million of these would do more than ruin a picnic! What is this insect?

Answer: ant

Normally ants aren't a real threat to humans, but these jungle ants are poisonous and very numerous - billions live in jungles around the world. Every day, they strip bare small patches of jungle before moving on to find another place to feed.
7. A very colorful reptile at times, the chameleon has a secret weapon that it uses to catch its prey. Hidden from view, it shoots out like lightning, catching the prey with sticky saliva. What is this secret weapon?

Answer: tongue

Chameleons use their ability to change color to sneak up on their prey. Once in range, the chameleon shoots its tongue (which is nearly twice the length of the chameleon's body) at the target in less than half a second, and retracts just as fast, giving prey no chance to escape.
8. I am a true king of the jungle. My spotted coat helps me hide from prey, and my ability to climb trees saves me from trouble on the ground. What African relative of the jaguar am I?

Answer: leopard

Leopards are usually solitary animals. Only to mate and then raise the young do leopards live with another. Once the cub reaches about a year and a half to two years old, and by that time independent, the mother and cub will part ways and mostly avoid each other.
9. Living along rivers and lakes in the jungles, and feeding on many plants and fruits, is what over-sized South American rodent?

Answer: capybara

Capybara can live for around 10 years. However, it is the favorite prey of so many different South American predators, that in the wild they rarely live past four years.
10. Another animal found in the Congolese rainforests is this weird animal with a head like a giraffe and stripes like a zebra, and therefore is known as the "zebra giraffe". What animal am I?

Answer: okapi

Okapis are, like leopards, solitary animals and reach maturity around a year and a half to two years old. They live primarily in the jungles and savannahs of The Congo.
