Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Write a four letter word to describe what plants start off as; the word is also used to describe a lentil.

Answer: seed

Seeds are the parts of plants that contain the embryo - the baby plant. When the seed germinates, the plant can begin to grow. Some seeds are edible, such as beans, lentils and peas. Yum!
2. Change one letter to form a word which means "to order somebody to go somewhere".

Answer: send

The word "send" has many meanings - others are "to send a letter" or "to send an email". It can also mean "to refer someone somewhere", for example to refer someone to someone else for advice.
3. Change one letter to fill in this blank: After you post it, your letter is ____ ?

Answer: sent

"Sent" is the past tense of our last word, "send". As well as this meaning, it is also the name of Estonian currency!
4. Change one letter to form a word which describes what you sit on; it can be another word for chair.

Answer: seat

A seat can mean anything that someone sits on, such as a place to sit at the theater, or on a plane, even on a rollercoaster! "By the seat of your pants" is a phrase used to mean that someone used guesses for something rather than knowledge.
5. Change one letter to form a word which means "to defeat somebody, especially in a contest".

Answer: beat

The word "beat" has various meanings - others include "physically hitting someone" (as in "beating someone up"), "tapping something repeatedly" (as in a "drum beat") and "to pulsate" (as in a "heart beat").
6. Change one letter to fill in this blank: An edible red root of a vegetable, which is sometimes pickled - ____root.

Answer: beet

The beet plant comes in many varieties, beetroot possibly being the most known. It can be cooked in various ways, and the leafy parts are also edible! Eating it is very good for cardiovascular (heart) health, and a red dye can be extracted from the roots! Don't mix up "beat" from the previous question with "beet"!
7. Change one letter to make a word to describe the things that you walk on!

Answer: feet

Your feet are at the end of your legs, and contain almost a tenth of all your bones! They are there to help you move around, but also to help support your body weight. Many animals also have feet, sometimes with different names, such as paws (in dogs) or hooves (in horses).
8. Change one letter to give a word which means "to worry about something".

Answer: fret

As well as meaning to worry yourself about something, "fret" can also mean to make someone else worried. The word has various other meanings too, such as "to wear away" for example by rubbing; the ridges found on a guitar are also called "frets".
9. Change one letter to form a word which means "not captive or restrained". It can also mean "without cost".

Answer: free

"Free" is a word with many meanings! As well as those in the question, a few more examples include the following: A self-ruling country is called "free", time when you are not busy - "free time", or not currently being used - as in "a free seat".

The state of being free (not imprisoned) is called freedom.
10. Change one letter to describe a large woody plant, usually with branches.

Answer: tree

Trees are usually quite large and can be home to many animals such as birds, who make their nests in trees. A group of trees together can form a copse, or a forest. A tree grows from a seed - which was the first word in this quiz!
