Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bananas are yellow when ripe and grow in groups on a tall plant.

Answer: True

Bananas are the most popular fruit in America. They are considered a tropical fruit and are a rich source of potassium.
2. Where are you most likely to find a southern magnolia tree?

Answer: Southern United States

The southern magnolia is one of my favorite trees. It grows well in states like Alabama and Mississippi. It is used as a shade tree in a lot of places because of its size and the amount of leaves on its branches.
3. Which of these is the state tree of California?

Answer: Redwood

Redwoods are humongous trees that can grow to be hundreds of feet tall. They can survive many different types of climate and can live to be thousands of years old.
4. I love trees, but I also love the beach. In which part of the United States will you find the Gulf of Mexico?

Answer: Southern United States

The Gulf of Mexico borders several states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama. The Mississippi River, the longest river in the United States, empties into it.
5. Which US state has become one of the top producers of blueberries?

Answer: Washington

According to www.worldatlas.com, Washington now leads the nation in blueberry production. The berries are not native to Washington state, but they have apparently become very popular with farmers there.
6. Which fruit's seeds are on the outside, giving it a slightly rough texture?

Answer: Strawberry

The roughness you feel on the outside of a strawberry is its seeds. It doesn't hurt you to eat them and you probably will never actually taste one.
7. This huge tree grows only in California. What is its name?

Answer: Sequoia

One of the most famous sequoias, named General Sherman, was so large a car could drive through it. It had a tunnel carved through its trunk that, at one time, was used for this purpose.
8. A platypus is found in the wild only in Australia.

Answer: True

A platypus is actually very poisonous. The male platypus has a spur on its back foot that can deliver a painful dose of venom. So it's a good idea to stay away from platypuses!
9. Which one of these animals lives in the sea?

Answer: Dolphin

Dolphins are marine animals that breathe through what is called a blowhole. They can swim deep underwater but have to come back up for air every so often. When they let air out of their blowhole, it sounds like a horse blowing air out of its nose.
10. Rainbow trout live in the Atlantic Ocean.

Answer: False

Rainbow trout are freshwater fish. Fishermen often go fishing for rainbow trout, and they are a common fish served in American restaurants.
