Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Home + chore = task set by a teacher to be done after school

Answer: Homework

Chore = work. No-one likes doing chores, but if you do them quickly, you've got more time to play.

Homework is school work that your teacher wants to do at home. And not many people like it, because home time is play time!
2. Home + make longer = the last part of a race

Answer: Homestretch

Make longer = stretch. You can stretch elastic to make it longer, but be careful, it can hurt when it snaps back!

The homestretch is the last part of a race or task, when you're nearly finished.
3. Home + created = not bought in a store

Answer: Homemade

Created = made. Created is a fancy word for made. Yesterday you created a tower using building blocks.

Homemade is anything not store bought. Like the clothes your mum made, or the cake she baked.
4. Home + small city or village = your local area

Answer: Hometown

Small city or village = town. When you send a letter or a card you need to write the street and town on the envelope so the postman knows where to go.

Your hometown is the place where you live. It might be a small town or a small part of a big city, but it's where your home is.
5. Home + nearing = American high school tradition

Answer: Homecoming

Nearing = coming. When your friends are coming over to play, they are approaching, getting nearer or due soon.

The Homecoming festival is a big event at American high schools. Past students are invited back, so are coming home to their school. After the football games and parades is the dance where the Homecoming King and Queen are chosen. They are invited back the next year to crown the new King and Queen.
6. Home + became older and bigger = what vegetables from your garden are

Answer: Homegrown

Became older = grown. An adult is a child who has grown up.

Homegrown vegetables and fruit have been planted and looked after by you in your garden. The opposite is store-bought.
7. Home + how the spider made its web = simple fabric made from your own yarn

Answer: Homespun

A spider's web is spun. Spun is the past tense of spin. Spiders spin a web today but spun a web yesterday. You can spin round and round until you get dizzy.

Homespun fabric is made at home from yarn from your own sheep or goats. It can also be called home weave. It is quite thick and rough material, not as soft as fabric that is woven on a machine. Home spinning is not done much now except as a display.
8. Home + the part of you that you can see = someone who doesn't like to go out.

Answer: Homebody

Part of you that you can see = body. When you look in the mirror you can see yourself. You can see your body, but you can't see your mind.

A homebody likes to stay at home and doesn't want to go out much. Some people like the quiet, some people like to play and talk.
9. Home + a separate part of the house = place for daily assembly at school

Answer: Homeroom

A separate part of the house = room. Like your bedroom or the bathroom.

Homeroom is a class where the teacher marks the roll and gives any announcements.
10. Home + unwell = How you might feel when away from family

Answer: Homesick

Unwell = sick. If you feel sick you can also say you feel ill.

Homesick is the feeling you sometimes get when you're away at camp. You are with your friends and having fun but you miss your family and your home.
