Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "On the last day of summer, ten hours before fall...my grandfather took me out to the Wall."

Answer: The Butter Battle Book

"The Butter Battle Book" was published in 1984 and (in rhyme) tells of an arms race between the Yooks and the Zooks, who live on the opposite sides of a wall. Their conflict is based on the right way to eat buttered bread: the Yooks like their bread butter-side up, while the Zooks prefer the opposite.

The story never actually says who wins the weapon escalation... they just sit, poised on the edge of mutual annihilation. A lovely allegory, seeing as it was written at the height of the Cold War.
2. "Do you ever sit and fidget when you don't know what to do?"

Answer: Hunches in Bunches

"Hunches in Bunches" is about a boy who has all sorts of good ideas, but they are constantly answered with crazy and contradictory answers by a number of weird people (wearing huge gloves on their heads). Everybody has an opinion, and they are not always good.

It was published in 1982.
3. "Did you ever have the feeling there's a Wasket in your basket?"

Answer: There's a Wocket in my Pocket!

Published in 1974, "There's a Wocket in my Pocket!" is about a boy with all sorts of strange (imaginary) creatures in his house, such as 'zlocks behind the clocks' or 'yeps on the steps'. Keeping things light and fun helps kids to not fear the unknown.
4. "I am Sam. I am Sam. Sam I am."

Answer: Green Eggs and Ham

"Green Eggs and Ham" was published in 1960 and tells of the attempts by Sam I Am to get Joey (that's his name, according to the Dr. Seuss Wiki) to try to eat some green eggs and ham. He goes to ridiculous lengths, until finally Joey relents and tries them, only to find out that (unlike he said earlier) he DOES like them.

A great book for encouraging kids to try something new.
5. "The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day."

Answer: The Cat in the Hat

Published in 1957, "The Cat in the Hat" tells of Sally and her brother, stuck in the house because of the weather, getting a visit from the Cat in the Hat. Their guest proves to be mischievous and a little wild, especially when he brings out Thing 1 and Thing 2. In the end, he cleans up the mess, showing kids that they can have fun, but have to be responsible, too.
6. "When I leave home to walk to school, Dad always says to me, 'Marco keep your eyelids up, and see what you can see.'"

Answer: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street

"And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" is a wonderful book about the imagination and how it really has no limits. Marco concocts a tall tale about all the things he 'sees' on his way home from school, but when he is finally asked what he saw by his stern father, he tells the truth.

Originally titled "A Story That No One Can Beat", it was Dr. Seuss' first published book, released in 1937.
7. "At the far end of town where the grickle grass grows and the wind smells slow and sour when it blows..."

Answer: The Lorax

Published in 1971, "The Lorax" is a stern admonishment against greed, capitalism and disregard for the environment. It follows a young boy who visits the 'Once-ler' and learns of how the Once-ler turned an idyllic area of Truffula trees and clean water into a wasteland, all for the production of 'thneeds' (a clothing item made from Truffula trees). The titular Lorax was the spokesman for the trees, who disappeared with the last tree.

The small hope of the story is that the next generation can still restore things, as the Once-ler gives the boy the last Truffula seed.
8. "It's hard to believe such a thing could be true, and I hope such a thing never happens to you."

Answer: Daisy-Head Mayzie

"Daisy-Head Mayzie" tells the story of Mayzie McGrew, who has a daisy suddenly sprout from the top of her head. Her classmates make fun of her, people try to exploit her by making her a celebrity, and in the end, Mayzie must learn that love is more important than fame and fortune.

"Daisy-Head Mayzie" was published posthumously, in 1995.
9. "Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!"

Answer: Oh, the Places You'll Go!

"Oh, the Places You'll Go!" was the last book published by Dr. Seuss before his death. It was released in 1990 and tells the story of 'you', specifically how you will be successful in this life, through all the ups and downs.
10. "You can think up some birds. That's what you can do. You can think about yellow or think about blue..."

Answer: Oh! The Thinks You Can Think!

As with many of his books, the imagination is the main feature of this story. "Oh! The Thinks You Can Think!" was published in 1975 and is simply a celebration of everything that you can think of... if only you try!
