Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Potatoes, oil, salt

Answer: French Fries

French fries have to be the number one favorite food with ketchup. It doesn't matter if they are curly, tots, wedges, or chips, it's ALL good!

Did you know that there is a bit of a feud between France and Belgium as to which country actually invented French fries? A journalist has found evidence that potatoes were deep fried as early as 1680 in Belgium along with fish, while in France references to fried potatoes have been found that date back to 1755. Some believe that fried potatoes were probably invented in Spain, since they were the first to find potatoes in the New World.
2. Cod, breadcrumbs, egg, seasoning

Answer: Fish Sticks

Called "fish fingers" in Britain, where they are considered to be a national food, fish sticks are believed to have been popularized in the United States by Gorton-Pew Fisheries in the 1950s. Although just about any kind of fish will do, it seems that most fish sticks are made with cod; using either a breadcrumb coating or batter, the processed fish can also be made into squares or fillets.
3. Chopped beef, seasoning, bun

Answer: Hamburger

While some sources trace the origin of the hamburger to Hamburg, Germany, others claim that it was invented in the United States. A recipe for a "Hamburgh sausage" appeared in a 1758 cookbook that was published in Dublin; immigrants aboard the Hamburg America Line were served a "Hamburgh steak" between two pieces of bread as early as 1847.

The claims of other inventors were made later; however, it is certain that the hamburger gained public recognition at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
4. Eggs, cream, cheese, pie crust, ham

Answer: Quiche

Okay! My grandson's repertoire of food may not quite extend to quiche yet, but scrambled eggs was too obvious to put as a choice!

Even though quiche is considered to be a French dish, there is evidence that it was made in Italy in the 1200s, and England in the 1300s. What makes the dish so popular is the fact that just about anything can be placed in the pie crust with the eggs - seafood, vegetables, meat, you name it!
5. Hot dog, crescent rolls

Answer: Pigs in a Blanket

Of course, pigs in a blanket are a favorite because they use both hot dogs, a kid's staple, and bread, another mainstay in a kid's diet.

Pigs in a blanket are different food items in different parts of the world. In England it is a sausage wrapped in bacon. In the U.S., however, the hot dogs, or sausages, are wrapped in some sort of bread and baked. The small type is used as an appetizer, while larger ones are served as a main course. Some variety of the dish is found throughout the world; in Israel it is "Moshe Ba'Teiva" or Moses in the basket, and in Russia it is "Сосиска в тесте", or sausage in dough.
6. Onions, flour, milk, egg, breadcrumbs

Answer: Onion Rings

My grandson was about two when he found that onion rings are the real deal! We were all shocked with surprise - it never occurred to us to offer one to him. And - he ate the onion, not just the batter!

Did you know that when onions are fried they become sweeter? While the origin of onion rings as a food dish is unknown, documentation points to its beginning in the United States. Kirbys Pig Stand in Texas claims they invented the onion ring in the 1920s; there is, however, a recipe in an 1802 cookbook for "Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese". Yummy!
7. Chicken, egg, flour, breadcrumbs

Answer: Nuggets

While my grandson would prefer to get his nuggets at a popular fast food chain, his love for chicken knows no bounds, be it fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken rings, popcorn chicken, or any other chicken!

Robert Baker, a profession at Cornell University, is given credit for inventing chicken nuggets in the 1950s, but it was 1980 before Chicken McNuggets were sold. It is true that homemade nuggets tend to be healthier than what dieticians have found at some restaurants, however, some have tried selling a vegetarian alternate, nuggets made of beans or falafel.
8. Cheese, breadcrumbs

Answer: Mozzarella stick

The great thing about mozzarella sticks is that they are tasty with many different types of condiments, including ketchup, marinara sauce, honey mustard, or ranch dressing. In addition, almost any kind of cheese works, including provolone, cheddar, or American. The first recipe for mozzarella sticks has been found in a French cookbook dating back to the late 1300s.
9. Raw milk, salt

Answer: Cottage Cheese

It is believed that cottage cheese was given its name because it was made in cottages from milk that was left after making butter. Because it is drained instead of pressed, cottage cheese contains both curds and whey. Eaten a variety of ways, with fruit, alone, or in jello salad, cottage cheese is considered to be a staple side dish.

Does anyone else remember that cottage cheese and ketchup was Richard Nixon's favorite food?
10. Pork trimmings, cornmeal, seasonings

Answer: Scrapple

Also known as "Pannhaas" or "pan rabbit", scrapple is made into a loaf, which is then sliced and pan fried. Back in the day it was considered to be a good use of the meat trimmings that were left over after butchering. Although this food has been around since ancient times, in the United States it is associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch. Typically it is eaten with breakfast.
