Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I lived in the town of Bethany and was a beloved friend of Jesus. My sisters Mary and Martha sent for Jesus when I became ill. He arrived four days after my death and wept with Mary at my tomb-just before he commanded me to come out. (I did, whole and alive once more!) Who am I?

Answer: Lazarus

The story of Lazarus is told in the Gospel of John, chapter 11. Rather than rushing to Bethany to heal His sick friend, Jesus waited because He knew that this miraculous resurrection would lead others to believe in God's grace.

It is in this passage that He speaks to Martha and tells us what we must do to have eternal life. (John 11.25 NRSV) "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, (26) and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die'."

2. Jesus and his mother were guests at my wedding. At weddings, it was customary to serve wine throughout the night, but eventually the wine started to run out. After much urging from his mother, Jesus turned the water we had into wine, and it was the best wine we'd had all night. Where did this happen?

Answer: The Wedding at Cana

The story of the wedding at Cana can be found in John 2:1-12 KJV. At a Jewish wedding in biblical times, it would have been of great shame to the bride and groom to run out of wine. When Mary first told Jesus to intervene, he told her that it wasn't His time, but eventually he transformed the water. This was Jesus' first miracle.
Running out of wine isn't a life and death situation but Jesus cared to help them just like God cares to help us no matter how serious the problem.

3. In the seventh chapter of Mark, my mom went to see a man named Jesus so he could help me. I was her daughter and we were of Greek ancestry, but we lived in the area of Syria and Lebanon. What was wrong with me, that prompted my mother to seek help from Jesus?

Answer: I was possessed by a demon

I had a demon possessing me. When my mom returned home after visiting Jesus, she found me resting in bed and made completely whole. The amazing thing to me was that he hadn't even had to visit me; he did it long-distance!

4. One day I went with a crowd of people to hear Jesus speak. It was getting late and everyone was starting to get hungry, so Jesus asked his disciples to find some food. How much food did they find to feed the crowd of 5,000?

Answer: Five loaves and two fish

Jesus fed the crowd of 5,000 men, plus women and children, using only five loaves and two fish. Not only did he feed them all, but there was food left over - twelve baskets full! This miracle can be read about in the Bible in all four gospels - John 6:6-14; Mark 6:30-44; Matthew 14:13-21; Luke 9:10-17.

5. My friends and I spent a long, frustrating night fishing and were tired and disappointed when morning arrived and we had not even a single fish to show for our hard work. Someone standing on the beach called out to us and told us to throw our nets on the other side of the boat and much to my surprise, the nets filled immediately with fish! Who was the mysterious person on the beach and what happened when we got back to the shore?

Answer: Jesus, and He prepared breakfast for us

Despite the heavy load of 153 fish, Peter was able, by himself, to pull the net to shore without it tearing or breaking, proof that no load is too heavy for us when we accept our Lord's help. Jesus led them to a fire He had built on the beach and they shared a breakfast of bread and fresh fish.

This happened after Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection and Peter and his friends were stunned when they realized that not only was He with them, He was more than happy to give them the help they needed, even when things appeared to be beyond hope. All they had to do was follow his instructions and have faith that He would never abandon them.

This story can be found in John, Chapter 21. It was the third time after His resurrection that Jesus appeared to his disciples.

6. I was an official named Jairus in the local synagogue who had heard of Jesus' great power. One of my family members at home was very sick and dying so I played my last card and went to find Jesus to heal her. Which member of my family was ill?

Answer: my daughter

This story can be found in Luke 8:40-56 KJV. Jesus did indeed raise Jairus' daughter from the dead. When he went to see Jesus, a messenger came to tell him that his daughter had died and not to bother Jesus. Jesus heard and told Jairus that he only had to believe to make her well. When Jesus saw the girl, he said that she was merely sleeping and when he asked her to rise she did.
When Jesus first said that the girl was sleeping, people laughed at him because they were sure she was dead. So you can imagine their surprise when the girl got up and asked for something to eat!

7. My name was Bartimaeus (pronounced bar-tim-may-us) and Jesus healed my vision. I was totally blind. How did Jesus help me to see?

Answer: He asked what I wanted him to do for me

Jesus merely asked me what I wanted and I told him that I wanted to to be able to see. He informed me that my faith in him had made me whole and suddenly I could see! He told me to go my own way, but instead, I followed him because I realized that was the way I suddenly wanted to go.

8. My friends and I were in a boat with Jesus when a furious storm came up. Jesus was sleeping, but the rest of us were afraid we were going to drown, so we woke Jesus up. What did Jesus do then?

Answer: Calmed the storm

Jesus got up and spoke to the wind and waves and the storm calmed down. Those in the boat with Jesus were his disciples and even they were amazed and asked "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." (Luke 8:25 NIV)

The account of this miracle can be found in the Bible in Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25.

9. In modern times, my story would have been a set up for a mother-in-law joke. We had just left the synagogue and went to my house for something to eat. When the master came to my house, He found her to be suffering from a terrible fever. All He did was touch her hand and the fever left my mother-in-law. Which apostle was I?

Answer: Peter

In Biblical times, disease was a serious matter. What we can now cure with fairly simple remedies were deadly to those without access to modern medicine. In Matthew's account(8:14-17), Jesus merely touched her hand and the intense fever left immediately. This may be conjecture on my part, but she may have been seriously ill for some time. By evening (because it was the Sabbath), many brought their sick and demon possessed to Jesus for healing, so Jesus' initial work on Peter's loved one must have been far beyond what was possible medically at the time.

10. During the passion week, Jesus and His disciples journeyed from Bethany to Jerusalem. On the journey they were hungry and went to pick fruit from a tree that bore no fruit. Jesus cursed the tree, and on returning the next day found it withered and dead. What kind of tree was it?

Answer: Fig tree

In Matthew 21:18-21, Jesus used this miracle to illustrate fruitfulness in one's spiritual life. Many today consider themselves a Christian, but bear no proof of a Christian life. Just as believers should have works to show the world, so should a fruit tree bear fruit. Just as a fruitless tree is of no use, so a believer with no good works affirming one's faith.
