Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young human beings are often called kids. But the young of what animal are also called kids?

Answer: Goats

Baby goats are called kids; a baby cat is a kitten, a baby cow is a calf, and a baby dog is a puppy. Goats are useful animals. They are raised for their milk, which is often used to make cheese, their wool, and sometimes for their meat. An adult male goat is called a billy goat, and a female goat is a nanny goat.
2. If someone is "kidding" you, what are they doing?

Answer: Joking with you or teasing you

Sometimes one of your friends may say something that sounds mean, but when you object, they will say "I was just kidding." That means they were not serious, but just teasing you. This term can also be used in the opposite way, to show someone is serious. For example, your friend might say, "That math test was hard. No kidding!"
3. There was once a famous pirate named Captain Kidd.

Answer: True

William Kidd was an English pirate who lived over 300 years ago. His ship was called the "Adventure Prize." Because France and England were at war, Captain Kidd was given permission to attack French ships, but he soon began plundering ships of other countries as well, and got into a lot of trouble. Like most pirates, Captain Kidd met a sad end. He was hanged in 1701.
4. If you describe someone as your "kid brother," what are you saying about him?

Answer: He is your younger brother

When you say "kid brother" or "kid sister," you are implying that your sibling is younger than you. For older siblings, we usually say "big brother" or "big sister."
5. If you are told to handle someone or something with "kid gloves," how should you behave?

Answer: Gently and carefully

Kid gloves are made from leather obtained from a young sheep or goat. The are delicate and easily soiled or damaged, so great care must be taken when wearing them. Eventually people began using the phrase "treat with kid gloves" to describe any situation where carefulness and tact are needed.

For example, your parents might tell you, "Your Uncle Fred is in a bad mood today because his football team lost. Handle him with kid gloves, or he may lose his temper."
6. There was a famous outlaw in the Old West who was sometimes called "The Kid." How is he best known?

Answer: Billy the Kid

Billy the Kid's real name was William Henry McCarty, Jr. Billy is a common nickname for William. He was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett when he was only 21 years old.
7. There is a funny song you may have heard called "Mairzey Doats." According to the song, mares eat oats, and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. What do kids eat?

Answer: A kid will eat ivy too

In this silly song, the words are slurred together, so it actually goes: "Mairzey doats, and dozy doats / And liddle lamzy divey / A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?" This was a hit song way back during WWII. By the way, you should NOT try to eat ivy! Many kinds of ivy are poisonous.
8. Most people like pizza. What popular pizza chain uses the motto "Where a kid can be a kid!"?

Answer: Chuck E. Cheese's

At Chuck E. Cheese's you can not only get pizza, there are also games that you can play, many of which award tickets that can be redeemed for prizes. Some locations even offer live entertainment. There are over 500 Chuck E. Cheese's locations worldwide. "Where a kid can be a kid!" has been Chuck E. Cheese's corporate motto since 1986.
9. It's fun to learn things about the world we live in. One way to do this is to watch a popular show on PBS called "_____ the Science Kid." What name goes in the blank?

Answer: Sid

Sid is a curious youngster who likes to know how things work. He asks a lot of questions, and likes to investigate how things work, often with the help of his friends and his teacher. "Sid, the Science Kid" is for young children; PBS also has a show called "Bill Nye, the Science Guy" for older kids.
10. If you are really smart, clever, or exceptionally good at something, you might be described as what sort of kid?

Answer: Whiz kid

"Whiz kid" is a phrase that goes back to the 1940s. There was a radio program called "Quiz Kids" that featured young people answering questions sent in by the audience, or competing against adults. "Quiz kids" eventually evolved into "whiz kids," and today the term "whiz kid" is used to describe any young person who is exceptionally good at something.

For example, if you are really good at using a computer, someone might call you a "computer whiz kid."
