Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have small apple tree in my garden. What I would like to do is trade them for some other fruit. Which long, yellow fruit would I like to trade my apples for?

Answer: Bananas

Bananas are a flowering plant of the genus Musa, originally found in the Indomalaya and Australian regions, although it is believed they were first cultivated in Papua New Guinea. Bananas are now grown in many tropical countries around the world. As well as the more recognised yellow varieties of banana, they can also be green, purple, red or brown when ripe.
2. The next item I have to trade is a picture of some animals. Which sort of animal is featured in the picture?

Answer: Puppies

The young of domesticated dogs are called puppies, and can be different sizes when born depending on the breed of dog. Although blind when born, puppies have a keen sense of smell, and over the first couple of weeks the rest of their senses develop. After around eight weeks, puppies can be socialized, introducing them to other people and new things, aiding their development.

By the age of three months, puppies become less dependent on their mothers and can be either kept or sold to new owners.
3. I would like to trade the picture I have for the one in this photo. What kind of vehicle, shown in the photo, do I want a picture of?

Answer: A picture of a racing car

People began to race cars not long after the invention of the automobile, and since then cars used for motor racing have developed into a wide variety of types from those based upon cars driven on the road to those specifically designed to race in various competitions.

The car in the photo is a Lotus Formula One car from the 1980s, driven around the streets of Monaco by three time Brazilian world champion Ayrton Senna. Senna went on to win six races at the Monaco Grand Prix, becoming one of the most successful drivers in the race's history.

The Formula One World Championship began in the early 1950s, and since then has developed into a global sport, with races having taken place around the world.
4. The next item I have to trade is something that I use to keep some of my pets in. What sort of aquatic habitat is depicted in the photo?

Answer: A fish tank

The use of fish tanks dates back to antiquity, with the Romans keeping fish in tanks with a glass from as early as 50 AD. The Chinese also were noted as keeping fish as early as the late 14th century.

Fish tanks as we know today became popular in the 19th century in the United Kingdom, and the hobby of fishkeeping soon began to spread, with the first public aquarium opening at London Zoo in 1853. By the early 20th century, pumps to circulate water, then heating elements and artificial lighting also came into use.

Fish tanks now come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and as well as being made from glass can also be made from acrylic.

With the advent of global air travel, the amount of different species of fish the can be kept has also grown, from native species to those from tropical and marine habitats.
5. In return for the pet habitat item I already have, I need a new home for my pet hamster, Hammy. What type of home, shown in the picture, would Hammy like to live in?

Answer: A cage

The Syrian hamster was first discovered in the 19th century by George Robert Waterhouse, however it was not until the late 1930s that hamsters were successfully bred in laboratories. Most of the hamsters alive today can have their lineage traced back to a mother and her litter captured in 1930.

Hamsters are not just confined to Syria, though, and can be found from Eastern Europe, through parts of Asia into China, although those species are generally dwarf hamsters such as the Russian, Chinese and Roborovski hamster. In nature, hamsters are nocturnal animals, most active at night time to avoid predators, and as pets are generally more active at night.

Generally solitary animals, a hamster cage should have plenty of room for them to move around, food, water and things to chew upon such as wooden toys to help keep their teeth from growing to long. It is also advisable that any hamster wheel provided for exercise is large enough for the hamster so it does not rub against any part of its body causing sores and injuries. In addition wire hamster wheels should be avoided to prevent their legs from becoming trapped and injured.
6. I have plenty of plants in my garden that I would like to trade. What kind of plant is in the photo?

Answer: Flowers

Flowering plants can be found globally, and as such the have evolved into various species, adept at finding places to grow, no matter how extreme the conditions from the deserts and polar regions of the world to woodland and open grass land.

Flowers are important to plants for reproduction, with the pollen produced in the flower helping fertilize the ovules, thus producing seed to create new plants. Although plants can self fertilize, many use insects - or in some cases birds - to aid pollination, attracting them with nectar produced by the plant.

Having flowering plants in the garden can help nature by providing food for pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies and other insects that form part of the food chain for other insects, birds or animals that feed upon them.
7. I would like to decorate my garden with some statues, such as the one in this picture. The statue I would like to trade for is what kind of flying figure of myths and legends?

Answer: A fairy

Statues date back to prehistoric times, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as being made from different materials. As civilisation developed, the use of statues grew, often depicting gods worshiped by various cultures or important people. Not only were these statues found in public places, but they could also be found in domestic settings as well, including gardens.

The statue in the picture is that of a fairy. Fairies are often associated with popular children's stories such as "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty". Probably the most famous fairy of them all though is Tinker Bell from J.M Barrie's "Peter Pan" story.
8. I would like to build up a collection of films to watch at home on TV. I need something to play them on so I can watch them. Which of these items would I need?

Answer: A DVD player

With the development of video tape, the popularity of buying films, TV programmes and such to view at home has grown since the late 20th century.

Initially such media could only be brought on either VHS or Betamax video tape, however the development of first DVDs (Digital Versatile Disc) and Blu-ray, along with the ability to download media from the internet has made building up a collection of films and TV programmes easier, making them available to watch at anytime you want to.

Although many films and TV programmes that were available to buy on video tape are now available on DVD or Blu-ray, there are a number that have not been and are only available on video tape. As such, second hand copies of video tapes can still be brought and transferred onto DVD or Blu-ray discs by a recorder, though the quality of the recording may be poor.
9. I have some magazines that I no longer need. These magazines are about a group of people from the future who own a spaceship. Which type of magazine would accurately fit the description of the items I wish to trade?

Answer: Sci-fi magazines

Science fiction has been a popular form of entertainment, growing in popularity with the advent of cinema and television programmes. As such various magazines have been published on the subject, either dedicated solely to a particular TV programme or science fiction in general. One of the best known TV science fiction series to have a magazine dedicated to it is "Star Trek".

The magazines in the photo are for "Blake's 7", a British TV programme from the late 1970s through to early 1980s.
10. The last thing I have to trade is a clock that wakes to wake me up in the morning. Which sort of clock may ring a bell tell you it is time to get up?

Answer: An alarm clock

The history of alarm clocks can be traced back to ancient Greece, with the philosopher Plato said to have owned a water powered alarm clock, whilst Ctesibius is said to have fitted his clock with dials and means to either drop stones on a gong or force air through a horn.

Mechanical alarm clocks - where the time at which the alarm went off could be set - began to appear around the 15th century; however it wasn't until the 18th century that more practicable alarms clocks for use in the home were developed.

Since then the various types of alarm clock has grown, from the more traditional clock with an analogue face and bell - such as the one in the photo - to digital alarm clocks that can either make an alarm sound out to play music or turn on a radio. Some alarm clock even have illuminated dials or displays making them easier to read the time at night.
