Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From New York City, which ocean will you cross to get to Europe?

Answer: The Atlantic Ocean

New York City is on the east coast of the United States, so you will sail east across the Atlantic Ocean to Western Europe. The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the world's oceans. Europe has no borders on the Pacific or Indian Oceans.
2. What is the word that best describes Europe?

Answer: continent

Europe is one of seven continents, or giant land masses, on earth. The other continents are Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. Sometimes Europe and Asia are referred to together as "Eurasia." If it was a continent, this would be by far the largest one, since Asia is already the largest continent.
3. You've sailed across the ocean to Europe by ocean liner. Which answer has TWO possible European countries you could land on?

Answer: France / England

England and France are two of the major countries in Europe with coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, where ships from America land. Ireland also has an Atlantic coast. Austria and Switzerland are "landlocked" countries, meaning they have no coastline on any sea or ocean. Neither Greece nor Turkey borders on the Atlantic Ocean.
4. You've docked at Southampton in merry old England. Before you head for France, you must see Westminster Abbey and ride on a double decker bus. Where do you go to do these things?

Answer: London

Ah yes, you're headed to London, home of Beefeaters, bobbies and Big Ben, as well as Westminster Abbey, a giant Gothic church in the heart of the city. Over one million people visit or take services in this living piece of British history every year. Seventeen British monarchs (kings and queens) are buried there.
5. You decide to go by train from England to France, but the English Channel, a major body of water at least 34 kilometers wide, separates you from France. Can you go by train, and if so, how?

Answer: Yes; there is now a train tunnel under the Channel

The Channel Tunnel (or "Chunnel" as it's commonly called) now allows high speed trains to travel between France and England, underneath the English Channel. Someone had the idea for this tunnel as long ago as 1802, but people in England were afraid it would make it easier for foreigners to invade. Work on the Chunnel began in 1988 and was finished in 1994.

The cost was over 4.5 billion euros.
6. Most everyone knows Paris, France's capital city, but there are many other great destinations in France. What is the name of the famous vacation spot on the south coast of France?

Answer: The Riviera

The Riviera is known as "The Cote d'Azur" in France. This translates to "coast of azure" or "blue coast" in English. The name comes from the clear blue water of the Mediterranean Sea, which makes up the southeastern border of France. The city of Cannes, home to a famous film festival, is on the French Riviera.
7. You've enjoyed France but you're ready for another country. Still, you want to keep practicing your French speaking ability. So what nearby country could you visit where lots of people speak French and it is an official language? (They are also known for their chocolate.)

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland is on the eastern border of France, a beautiful, mountainous land-locked country. It has four official languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh (which comes from latin, but is more similar to modern German).
8. Now that you've been on the continent for a while, you realize different countries are using the same money, and it's different from what was used in England. What is this currency called?

Answer: The Euro

The European Union (EU) is a grouping of countries in Europe, founded in 1993, that joined together for political and economic reasons. In 2015, there were 28 countries in the union. The shared currency, which is used in at least nineteen of these countries, is called the euro. England is part of the EU but still uses its old currency, the pound.
9. The next leg of your journey takes you to a country shaped like a boot. Where are you now?

Answer: Italy

FUN FACTS: Italy has more volcanoes than any other country in Europe, and also gets shaken by the most earthquakes. Soccer is Italy's favorite sport and the country has won the World Cup four times.
10. Time to go home. Your plane will leave from a 3,000 year old capital city which was ruled by Caesar and is home to the ancient Colosseum. What is its name?

Answer: Rome

Rome is the by far the largest city in Italy with almost three million people. Venice is the city of canals. Florence is famous for its works of art. Genoa was the home town of Christopher Columbus.
