Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you take some sugar, molasses, an egg and some ground spice made from an underground stem, you will get which finger-clicking cookie?

Answer: gingersnap

Mixing these ingredients and a few more make gingersnaps. The ginger spice is made from the rhizome (root) of the ginger plant. Gingerbread people are also made with ginger; they are prepared a little differently, though.
2. "You're darn tootin' we like..." the name of this cookie. You take a fruit that originated in the Middle East, cook and cut it and roll it in a sweet pastry dough. Put in the oven for a few minutes and you have which of these cookies?

Answer: fig newton

For years the Nabisco Company used the jingle "You're darn tootin' we like Fig Newtons" to advertise these cookies. The cookie was named for the city of Newton, Massachusetts. After many years of using only figs for the filling, Nabisco branched out to use cranberries, raspberries and strawberries. Yum!
3. Cookie baked another cookie that sounds like it would be nice on a hot day. It's made from sugar, powdered sugar, some Kool-Aid and the zest of a certain citrus fruit and will produce which cookie?

Answer: lemon cooler

Lemon coolers are vanilla wafers or rolls of dough with lemon zest and dusted with a mix of Kool-Aid lemonade powder and powdered sugar. American Girl Scouts, as part of their cookie-sales project, sell a version called Savannah Smiles.
4. If we baked a mixture of almonds, coconut, sugar, egg whites and vanilla, what kind of cookie would we get?

Answer: macaroons

Macaroons originated somewhere in Europe. Someone made them with almonds, then someone made them with coconut, and then someone tried mixing them both together. Aren't you glad they did?
5. Oh look, Cookie made some crunchy cookies that look like fingers or little slices of bread. They can be almond or anise flavored and were originally made in Italy. What are they?

Answer: biscotti

As well as having almond or anise flavoring, biscotti can also be lemon-flavored or have nuts or fruits mixed in. They were made long ago to be carried by Roman legions, who gave them the name biscotti. In northern Italy they are called cantucci.
6. What is a long, silly-sounding name for a cookie made with sugar, eggs, vanilla and cinnamon and baked until they puff up and spread?

Answer: snickerdoodle

Snickerdoodles are called snapdoodles in some places. They are soft and have a strong cinnamon taste. It is believed they originated in New England, USA, from German or Dutch immigrants.
7. Horses like to eat this grain and you will too if it's mixed with brown sugar, sugar, eggs, a little cinnamon and more. What kind of cookies has Cookie baked now?

Answer: oatmeal

Oatmeal cookies are sweet tasting from the brown sugar and cinnamon. Some recipes add a little nutmeg. Raisins or nuts can be added, too.
8. These cookies originated in Scotland, where they are called biscuits. They were originally baked for Christmas and New Year's celebrations. They're not too tall. What is their name?

Answer: shortbread

Shortbread is easy to make, using just butter, flour, salt and sugar. There were several original recipes, but Mary, Queen of Scots is credited with defining the best one, in the 16th century.
9. A sweet, soft cookie is made from sugar, egg, flour, cinnamon and a dark syrup made from sugar. Which of these is Cookie carrying in her carryall?

Answer: molasses

Molasses cookies are tasty, chewy and easy to bake. The batter is dripped onto a baking sheet and put in the oven. Nine minutes later you have your cookies! A harder version of the cookie can also be made.
10. One of everyone's favorite cookies was first made by mistake because the owner of the Toll House Inn ran out of brown sugar. She substituted pieces of a candy bar and made what now-famous cookie?

Answer: chocolate chip

In 1937, Ruth Wakefield was making cookies at her inn on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Running out of sugar, she used pieces of Nestle's Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar in the mix, thinking they would melt into the batter. They didn't but became soft little chocolate chunks. And thus was born a most-favorite cookie.

Mrs. Wakefield agreed to let the Nestle company print her cookie recipe on their bags of chocolate morsels. In return, Mrs. Wakefield received not only a cash payment, but all the chocolate she wanted for the rest of her life. Now, that was a sweet deal!
