Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Slimy! Not in my house!" I loved turning over rocks around my house to see what was under them. What slippery green creature had I gotten my hands around?

Answer: frog

Frogs are slippery, green amphibians. They live near water, or cool and damp places like under rocks. Because of this, they are usually slimy and dirty, which is why mom didn't want it in her house!
2. "Adorable! But not in my house!" Even though it was a pet, mom did not want this brown, fluffy animal in her house. I kept it in a cage on the porch instead.

Answer: rabbit

When I was younger, I got a pet rabbit from my church during Easter. Rabbits are popular pets and common in the wild too. They are a symbol of spring, which is why some churches will give them out during Easter.
3. "Creepy! Not in my house!" This creepy crawly critter is an arachnid, and I had caught one in a jar. It was rather large, and mom preferred it stay out of the house.

Answer: spider

Spiders look like insects, but they have eight legs instead of six, and are actually arachnids. Although they are creepy and many people don't like them, they are very important animals. They spin webs and feed on insects, and help control their populations.
4. "Neat! But not in my house!" I found an animal with a hard shell crawling around my yard. What creature was always too slow to avoid my curiosity?

Answer: turtle

Turtles have large, hard shells that cover most of their bodies. These shells protect them from predators, but also make them very slow. Most turtles are harmless, but a few can be dangerous to people.
5. "Dirty! Not in my house!" I loved finding these in the spring. It is a type of home made out of dried mud and leaves and usually found in trees or high places.

Answer: bird nest

Birds make nests out of many things, but mostly leaves and dried mud. Some birds will use the same nest for many years. Mom didn't want it in the house because the dried mud and leaves would make a mess, and the nest might have bugs in it.
6. "Careful! Not in my house!" I found a blue, roundish object lying on the ground. What should I have left alone, even though it excited me enough to bring to mom?

Answer: robin's egg

Birds lay eggs during spring, and the eggs of a North American robin are a beautiful pale blue color. Sometimes eggs will fall out of a nest or get abandoned. It can be hard to decide what to do with such eggs, and you should ask your mom or dad for advice on what to do.
7. "Stray! Not in my house!" One of my favorite animals was one that visited our house occasionally, despite having an owner. I knew it loved us because it would bring us dead mice as presents (yuck!).

Answer: cat

Many cats can become stray if their owners abandon them. The cat that used to visit us had an owner that let it wander around the neighborhood. We used to give it a lot of attention, which is why it started bringing us dead mice and chipmunks as gifts! That's how we knew we gave it too much attention, and had to chase it away.
8. "Dangerous! Not in my house!" I had found a brown thing that felt like paper, and full of six-sided holes. I thought it was ok, but mom was worried. What possibly dangerous thing should I have never brought into the house?

Answer: hornet's nest

I had found a small hornet's nest. This one was abandoned, but you should NOT go near them the way I did. There might still be hornets around, and they can sting you. If you find one, do NOT handle it yourself! Ask an adult for help.
9. "Pretty! But not in my house!" We had a lot of flowers at our house, and colorful flying insects would stop by and pollinate them. What had I carefully gotten my hands on this time?

Answer: butterfly

Butterflies help pollinate flowers, and are usually very colorful and pretty. I used to catch butterflies with my bare hands, but you have to be very careful if you do so. Their wings are delicate and easily damaged.
10. "Eek! Not in my house!!" But this time it wasn't me! A small, brown animal with a thin tail was scurrying around the floor, making it hard to find and catch. What little pest had invaded our house this time?

Answer: mouse

Some people keep mice as pets, but few people enjoy the company of wild mice. Even though you don't see them a lot, they live in the walls of most houses. Sometimes, they come out at night looking for food.

Mom managed to corner this mouse and throw it out of the house.
