Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Poor Panda is a long way from home. As the chef searches for him he hides in the safest place he can think of. It's where the Queen of England keeps her crown when she isn't wearing it. Where has Panda hidden?

Answer: The Tower of London

All of the crown jewels, which include the state crown, the orb and the sceptre, all of which are used in coronation ceremonies, are kept in the Tower of London. They are kept in the Jewel Tower, which is open to the public every day. All of the jewels are kept behind bullet and explosion proof glass.

There have been various attempts over the years to steal them. The most famous was in 1671 when Colonel Thomas Blood did manage to get some of the jewels out of the tower they were kept in. He and his gang were captured before they left the actual Tower of London and the jewels were all recovered.
2. While the chef is still looking in England, Panda has managed to get across the English Channel to France. He is now in Paris and he needs to get on a boat to start travelling down the river that runs through that city. What is it called?

Answer: Seine

The river Seine runs through Paris and is very popular with tourists. River cruises on boats called Bateaux Mouche run up and down the Seine. At night many of the many tourist attractions are illuminated and can be seen from the river. These include Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower. A typical river cruise takes about an hour.
3. The chef has picked up Panda's trail and is not far behind him. Panda escapes into Germany and finds himself in Berlin, standing where the Berlin wall used to be. When was this wall torn down?

Answer: 1989

The Berlin wall was built in 1961 and completely surrounded what was then East Germany. The communist ruling party said it was to protect the East Germans from capitalist influences, but in truth it was to keep them in and stop them leaving what was an increasingly oppressive country. Over the years many people did manage to escape over it or under it, but many others died in the attempt.

In 1989 the communist political system was collapsing in many countries, and the East German authorities announced their citizens would be free to visit the west. Thousands of people started chipping away at the wall, taking pieces as souvenirs and starting to destroy it.

The authorities later finished the job with bulldozers. East and West Germany were formally reunified into one country in October 1990.
4. As he tries to head for the airport Panda spots the chef lurking in the entrance, cleaver poised. He runs and hides in the nearest cinema. To his great joy they are showing a film about a panda chosen as the Dragon Warrior. What is it called?

Answer: Kung Fu Panda

Created in 2008 "Kung Fu Panda" is a martial arts film set in historic China. Po the panda, a complete martial arts novice, is chosen as the Dragon Warrior. He must fight an evil kung fu master (a snow leopard) to keep everyone safe.
All the characters are based on animals, who are voiced by some very famous people. Jack Black is Po and other animals are voiced by Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and Ian McShane. The original film was so successful that it spawned sequels.
5. Coming out of the cinema Panda is pleased to see that the chef has disappeared. He heads into the airport. The only plane he can get on is bound for Warsaw, which isn't where he wanted to go, but it does get him a bit nearer home. Which country is he bound for?

Answer: Poland

Prior to World War II Poland was an independent republic. Invaded by both Germany and Russia during the War it suffered massive damage, and after the War became allied to the Soviet Union. They appointed a puppet government, and from then until the late 1980s they effectively ruled Poland.

The rise against communism that spread across Europe in the 1990s saw the overthrow of the communist government in Poland, and the establishment of a truly democratic republic. Warsaw is the capital city of Poland, and has been so since 1596.
6. Panda knows he has to keep moving. He gets on a boat bound for Japan. He remembers that in 2011 parts of the coast of Japan were hit by a terrible natural disaster. What was it?

Answer: Tsunami

In March 2011 a massive earthquake hit Japan. Its centre was under the sea off the coast of Japan, and it triggered a massive tidal wave (tsunami). The wave reached a height of 133 feet in places, and travelled more than ten miles inland. It caused massive damage and many people lost their lives.

The earthquake that caused it was so powerful it actually moved Honshu, which is Japan's main island, eight feet to the east, and also altered the angle of the axis of the earth by somewhere between four and ten inches.
7. As he is going to be on the ship for a while Panda decides to explore. He heads for the kitchen area, only to find the mad chef sitting there chopping up toy pandas with his cleaver. He runs to find somewhere safer to look round. What, though, is the correct name for the kitchen on a ship?

Answer: Galley

The kitchen on a ship is always called a galley. This probably comes from 'gallery' as, before there was a proper room for cooking, sailors cooked their meals on a brick gallery situated anywhere convenient on the ship. Galley is also used for the kitchens on aircraft and trains, as well as any kitchen area on a shore based naval establishment. Ships' kitchens have special features to enable them to cope with the ship rolling in bad weather. Everything is secured and has anti roll systems installed, and hot ovens and cookers have safety rails so that no-one call fall against them and burn themselves if the ship suddenly lurches.
8. Panda thinks he manages to leave the ship without chef spotting him. He decides he wants something to eat. To his horror the mad celebrity chef brings a plate of fugu to his table. What is this made from?

Answer: Pufferfish

Fugu is prepared from pufferfish, and if not prepared properly is poisonous. The toxic parts have to be carefully removed, and Japanese law says that only chefs who have been properly trained can prepare this dish. The liver is the most toxic part, and in the past this was also the most popular part of the fish to eat. Since 1984 restaurants in Japan have been banned from serving the liver. People do sometimes try to prepare fugu in their home, and deaths from improperly prepared fish have happened.
9. Panda runs from the restaurant with the chef in hot pursuit. He leaps onto a ship bound for his home country just as it is departing. The chef is not in time to get on board and the last Panda sees of him is him bouncing up and down with rage on the quayside. Panda is on his way home, but where is home for most pandas?

Answer: China

The beautiful black and white giant panda, which is a member of the bear family, is native to China. Now found in only a few mountainous areas, it is an endangered species. This is partly due to the fact that there are only two to four days a year when it can breed.

It is a solitary animal, so pandas only come together at breeding time. In recent years captive breeding techniques have improved a lot, and the population in China in gradually increasing.
10. Home at last Panda breathes a sigh of relief. Thank goodness the chef didn't get me, he thinks. I'm sure that panda sandwiches are most indigestible. He settles down for a snack and a sleep. What is the main part of a panda's diet?

Answer: Bamboo

A fully grown panda spends around 14 hours a day foraging and eating, and goes through around nineteen kilograms of fresh bamboo. Most of them depend on about ten species of bamboo, all of which will grow within their territory. All of them though can eat any of up to forty bamboo species. In captivity the bamboo diet is accompanied by various supplements.
