Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hickory Dickory Dock, The _____ ran up the clock. The clock struck one, The _____ ran down! Hickory Dickory Dock."

Answer: Mouse

"Hickory Dickery Dock" can be traced back to 1744. It is believed to be a counting song to help young people learn numbers.
2. "Old King Cole was a merry old soul And a merry old soul was he; He called for his pipe, and he called for his bowl And he called for his -----rs three. Every ------r he had a ------, And a very fine ------ had he; Oh there's none so rare, as can compare With King Cole and his ------rs three."

Answer: fiddle

The roots of "Old King Cole" can be traced to about 1708. Cole or Ceol is believed to have been a Briton in the time of the Roman occupation.
3. "Little Jack Horner Sat in the corner, Eating a Christmas pie; He put in his thumb, And pulled out a ----, And said 'What a good boy am I!"

Answer: Plum

It is believed that a poet named Henry Carey first published it in 1725. He may have been satirising Ambrose Philps, famous for his infantile poetry for children.
4. "Mary had a little ----, little ----, little ----, Mary had a little ----, whose fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went, and everywhere that Mary went, the ---- was sure to go."

Answer: Lamb

This is believed to be an American rhyme. Sarah Josepha Hale is given credit for the rhyme first published in 1830. It is alleged that it was based on an actual incident.
5. "Little Boy ----, Come blow your horn, The sheep's in the meadow The cow's in the corn; Where is that boy Who looks after the sheep? Under the haystack Fast asleep."

Answer: Blue

The rhyme is first found in print in 1744. It is probably older than that as Shakespeare alludes to it in "King Lear".
6. "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe Catch a tiger by the toe If he ------- let him go, Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. My mother told me To pick the very best one And you are [not] it."

Answer: Hollers

Although not found in print until 1840, it is believed that the 'eeny, meeny, miny, moe' could possibly date back to the Celt culture. It is a counting or selection rhyme.
7. "Little Bo-Peep has lost her -----, And doesn't know where to find them; Leave them alone and they'll come home, Bringing their tails behind them."

Answer: Sheep

This rhyme was first found in a manuscript in 1805 and later in a compilation in 1810. It is possible that it was based on an old children's game.
8. "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's ------, And all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty together again!"

Answer: Horses

Probably this rhyme has more theories than many others. One is that it was an alcoholic drink with a mixture of brandy and ale. Another is that it was a slang term for an awkward person (who perhaps drank the boilermaker). It may also be an allusion to the disposition of the king by Oliver Cromwell. Humpty Dumpty is generally considered an egg in modern context but that reference is not made in early versions.
9. "Jack Sprat ----- eat no fat His wife ----- eat no lean And so betwixt the two of them They licked the platter clean."

Answer: Could

According to legend, King Charles I declared war on Spain but Parliament refused to finance it. Queen Henrietta, however, levied a tax to pay for her husband's war. Thus, although Charles was 'lean', his queen was 'fat'.
10. "There was an old woman who lived in a ----, She had so many children she didn't know what to do! So she gave them some broth without any bread, And she whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed!"

Answer: Shoe

It could be a reference to Caroline, Queen to George II who bore eight children. Others think it might refer to England trying to control its vast flung colonies.
