Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many planets in our solar system are made mostly of gas?

Answer: Four

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune are mostly made out of gases, usually helium and/or hydrogen, around a small rocky core. They are called "gas giants". They are also called Jovian planets (Jovian means "like Jupiter").
2. What layer of the atmosphere is the hottest?

Answer: Thermosphere

"Thermo" means heat. The thermosphere is the closest to the sun which makes it the hottest.
3. Who was the first person to walk on the moon?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Even though Neil Armstrong was one of a few people to venture to the moon, he was the first person to set foot on it. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin was the second person to walk on the moon.
4. Which planet is the hottest?

Answer: Venus

Venus is about 100 degrees (Fahrenheit) hotter than Mercury. Mercury is the second hottest planet.
5. How many of the planets, apart from Earth, are named after gods?

Answer: All of them

The Greek god Poseidon's Roman name was Neptune, Aphrodite's was Venus and so on, giving the names of our planets.
6. A light year is the distance light travels in a year.

Answer: True

A light year is how astronomers (people who study space and the stars) measure distance in space. Just like we measure in miles/ kilometers, but a light year is a much, much bigger distance!
7. What is the name of the biggest planet in our solar system?

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter is the biggest planet, then Saturn and so on.
8. Does Venus take a longer time or shorter time in Earth days to orbit the Sun?

Answer: Shorter time

Venus is closer to the Sun than Earth, which means its orbit is smaller than any planet behind it in the solar system.
9. What do you call the study of space?

Answer: Astronomy

Astronomy is the study of space. Biology is the study of living things. Zoology is the study of animals, and botany is the study of plants.
10. What is the name of the constellation shaped like a crab?

Answer: Cancer

The stars that make up the constellation Cancer form a shape like a crab. That is how it got its name. There are other constellations like the Big and Little Dipper. They got their names because they look like spoons/"dippers".
