Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Japan
The Land of the Rising Sun, the nation of Japan is comprised entirely of islands off the coast of the Asian continent. With more than 120,000,000 people, it's amongst the most populated countries in the world with its capital, Tokyo, being a sprawling and futuristic city also rooted in tradition. Japan is also home to Mount Fuji, an active volcano and perhaps one of the most famous in the world.
2. Dubai
Found in the United Arab Emirates, the city of Dubai has grown over the decades from a small fishing village to the home of mega-tall skyscrapers, massive architectural and engineering projects, and luxury vacation spots. In 2010 the city saw the opening of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, overlooking the Persian Gulf.
3. The Great Wall of China
Perhaps the biggest feat of engineering in the world, the Great Wall of China stretches more than twenty-thousand kilometres across China from the ocean at its east end to the desert in its west. Because the wall was used to guard China from warriors and tribes to the north, its most famous sections have large guard towers spread throughout. Today, only certain sections of the wall are able to be visited; a lot of it is old and in disrepair.
4. Borneo
The world's third-largest island, Borneo is so big that it contains three countries. Brunei is entirely situated on Borneo while Indonesia and Malaysia also share chunks of it. Straddling the Equator, Borneo is home to vast rainforests, tropical beaches, and mountainous reaches.
Some of its better-known and larger cities include Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, Malaysia and Balikpapan, Indonesia.
5. Mongolia
Sitting right between Southern Russia and Northern China, the country of Mongolia is unique for being one of the most sparsely populated in the world. Half of its citizens live in Ulaanbaatar, its capital. Because of its borders and location, Mongolia is landlocked; it does not have any coastline. In its southern reach, it's home to the Gobi Desert, one of the largest in the world.
6. The Taj Mahal
Perhaps India's most recognized building, the Taj Mahal is a beautiful white marble structure built in the city of Agra. Although the building is actually a tomb, today it's known for its beauty, its distinct shape, and its expansive gardens, all walled in from the city around it and sitting on the edge of the Yamuna River.
7. Siberia
A massive region of Russia comprised of more than thirteen million square kilometres, Siberia is famously known for being severely cold in the winter and otherwise empty of big cities (for the most part). A sprawling wilderness, it sits along the Arctic Ocean to the north and contains some of the most northern reaches on the globe.
The city of Omsk, sitting on the far southwest of Siberia, is a nearly-three-thousand kilometre drive from Moscow.
8. Hong Kong
Found on the Pearl River Delta, the city of Hong Kong is one of the financial capitals of the world and home to millions of people in its small area, most living in high-rises. Found across the river from Shenzhen and only a short distance from Macau, it's one of Asia's most important port cities, being a hub for shipping by boat due to its convenient, sheltered spot in the South China Sea.
9. Mount Everest
The highest mountain in the world above sea level, Mount Everest, found in Nepal, tops out at 8,848.86 meters and is one of the most famous peaks on the planet. The first recorded summiting of Everest was in 1953 and today it's one of the most sought-out climbs in the Himalayas, even if it is still one of its most dangerous.
10. Jerusalem
With a long history dating back to pre-Biblical times, the city of Jerusalem sits in the Middle East at one of Asia's westernmost points. Also, at one time, known as the City of David, Jerusalem is home to not only a large population, but a significant number of religious sites including the Temple Mount, the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock.
