Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the pool in which the lion-skin was found?

Answer: Caldron Pool

Shift the Ape and Puzzle the Donkey lived near the pool in western Narnia. When they found the lion-skin, Shift put into action the events which were to lead to the worst crisis ever to face Narnia.
2. What did Puzzle want to do with the lion-skin?

Answer: he wanted to bury it

Puzzle wanted to give the skin a proper funeral even though it was unlikely to be a Talking Lion, because it was a lion - 'Because of you know Who.'
3. How old was King Tirian?

Answer: between 20 and 25

'. . . his shoulders were already broad and strong and his limbs full of hard muscle, but his beard was still scanty. He had blue eyes and a fearless, honest face.'
4. What was the name of the Centaur who spoke to Tirian and told him that the signs in the skies were not favourable?

Answer: Roonwit

News had spread that Aslan was in Narnia, and the King was excited. When Roonwit told him that it was unlikely to be true he was angry that someone had dared to lie about Aslan.
5. After killing the two Calormenes, Tirian and Jewel fled. At what point did Tirian stop and say that they had to give themselves up?

Answer: when they had crossed the stream

Tirian was distressed that he did not give the Calormens warning of attack - that he was dishonoured forever. He felt that the only thing he could do was to give himself up, and Jewel agreed with him.
6. When Shift wanted more respect, he told everyone he was - what?

Answer: a Man

He said he was very old (hundreds and hundreds of years) so he looked wizened and ape-like. And because he was so old he was incredibly wise so everyone should do what he said.
7. Which of the following was NOT mentioned by Shift as being improvements he could make with the wages of the Narnians in exile?

Answer: apples, pears and strawberries

The fruits Shift was interested in were oranges and bananas, and, as he had demanded all the hoarded nuts from the Squirrels, nuts.
8. Although it was barely ten minutes since he saw the 'Friends of Narnia' in his vision, that Eustace and Jill arrived, how much time had elapsed in England?

Answer: nearly a week

No matter how long anyone from our world spends in Narnia, it would take no time at all, and there appeared to be no logic to the passing of time between (compare the year spent between 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' and 'Prince Caspian' being hundreds of years, yet the gap between 'Prince Caspian' and 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' was just a matter of a few years.) In this case, King Tirian was seventh in descent from King Rilian, the lost Prince of 'The Silver Chair'.
9. Settling down for the night in the tower, they faced a basic supper of a kind of porridge and nothing but water to drink. The three (Tirian, Eustace and Jill) each said they would prefer something else to drink - which of the following was NOT mentioned?

Answer: lemonade

When Poggin the Dwarf joined them the food was better, but little could be done about the availability of different liquid refreshment.
10. What did Tirian do to the Calormen sentry once he had rescued Jewel?

Answer: he apologised

'"I have done thee some discourtesy, soldier," said Tirian. "But such was my need. If we meet again I may happen to do thee a better turn. Now, Jewel, let us go softly."'
11. What tale did Shift and Ginger put about for the disappearance of Tirian?

Answer: Aslan swallowed him whole

This story was to enforce Shift's story of Tirian being against Aslan, and also that Aslan would not show himself again, as he was so angry; without Puzzle he had no 'lion' to show.
12. Jewel told the stories of Narnian history as they walked to meet the Centaur, and spoke of one Queen who was so beautiful that if she looked into any forest pool the reflection would shine out of the water like a star for a year and a day afterwards. What was this Queen's name?

Answer: Swanwhite

He also told how King Gale (ninth in descent from King Frank) delivered the Lone Islanders from a dragon and thus received the Lone Islands as part of the royal lands of Narnia for all time.
13. Who realised the danger of having Puzzle continue to wear the lion-skin after the truth was twisted by Shift?

Answer: Jewel

Jewel whispered in Jill's ear and she went back and took the lion-skin off the donkey, kicking it into the bushes.
14. How did Emeth address the Captain?

Answer: 'My Father'

In the Calormen army the common soldiers called the officers 'My Master', but the officers call the senior officers 'My Father'.
15. What was the name of the Calormene Captain?

Answer: Rishda Tarkaan

Rishda had taken over from Shift as the brains behind the operation, using Shift and Puzzle for his own purposes. When Ginger joined the team, he and Rishda worked together. Now, with Ginger out of the picture (he saw Tash and lost his Talking Beast status), Rishda tried to save his position as leader against the attack of King Tirian and his Narnians.
16. Who threw Shift into the Stable?

Answer: Tirian

Poggin opened the door on Tirian's orders, and Shift was thrown in. There was a blinding light and awful noises, and then nothing. This scared the frightened Narnians even more, and even startled Rishda Tarkaan, who did not believe in either Aslan or Tash.
17. Which two animals were told to stand with Jill at the beginning of the battle?

Answer: the Boar and the Bear

Jewel and Puzzle (the Unicorn and the Donkey) were deployed to Tirian's right while Jill, the Boar and the Bear were to the left. He stood in the centre with Eustace on his right and Poggin on his left, the Dogs behind, the Eagle (Farsight) hovering above and the gnawers (Mice and Squirrels) were sent down the hill to release the Horses.
18. What happened to the Horses?

Answer: they were shot by the Dwarfs

Jewel and Eustace were angry when they saw this, and Jill was tearful. Tirian urged Jewel not to retaliate, and then said 'And peace, Eustace. Do not scold. No warrior scolds. Courteous words or else hard knocks are his only language.'
19. Who said, 'It may be for us the door to Aslan's country and we shall sup at his table tonight.'

Answer: Jewel

Eustace had already been thown into the Stable, and it looked as if the Calormenes, who had rallied to the drum call, would win the battle and they would all end up being thrown in there. Jewel was comforting Jill when he said this.
20. What happened to the Captain?

Answer: Tirian took him into the Stable with him

Knowing he would end up in the Stable anyway, Tirian grabbed him by the belt and jumped into the Stable with him. No sooner had he done so than Tash came and demanded to know why Rishda had called him to Narnia. When the Tarkaan did not answer, he grabbed Rishda - taking him away when the High King Peter told him to leave.
21. To whom did Jill first introduce Tirian?

Answer: King Peter

Peter, the High King, introduced the Lady Polly, the Lord Digory, King Edmund and Queen Lucy.
22. Who said, 'Well done, last of the Kings of Narnia who stood firm at the darkest hour'?

Answer: Aslan

'A brightness flashed behind them. All turned. Tirian turned last because he was afraid. There stood his heart's desire, huge and real, the golden Lion, Aslan himself, and already the others were kneeling in a circle round his forepaws and burying their hands and faces in his mane as he stooped his great head to touch them with his tongue.

Then he fixed his eyes upon Tirian, and Tirian came near, trembling, and flung himself at the Lion's feet, and the Lion kissed him and said, "Well done, last of the Kings of Narnia who stood firm at the darkest hour."'
23. What happened after the Dragons and giant Lizards ate every living plant on Narnia?

Answer: The seas came over the land.

After the seas came over the land, the sun destroyed the moon, then Father Time squeezed the sun. The temperature suddenly dropped and Aslan told Peter to shut the door.
24. They all thought the landscape inside the Stable was familiar, but what sight finally convinced them that they were in a land identical to Narnia?

Answer: Mount Pire

It was Edmund who spotted Mount Pire. Although it was very like, it was different - this was the real Narnia, of which the Narnia they knew was just a copy.
25. Having reached the Garden, they met again all their old friends from their past adventures. Jewel was rendered shy by the sight of one creature - who?

Answer: Fledge the Flying Horse

Aslan was concerned that Peter, Edmund, Lucy, Eustace and Jill were not as happy as he meant them to be. When they said that they were expecting to be sent back as they had in the past, he told them that they were, as they said in the shadowlands, dead, and would remain. "The dream is ended: this is the morning."
