Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The little boy gathers her leaves and makes ________ out of them to play "king of the forest."

Answer: crowns

The first thing we hear about the tree giving the little boy is her leaves. He'll collect them "and make them into crowns and play king of the forest." The page before, when it says "and he would gather her leaves," the words are imitating the falling of the leaves. There is one word on each line, keeping the young children reading this book interested.
2. Which of these games do the tree and the boy play together?

Answer: hide-and-go-seek

On the page where it says "and they would play hide-and-go-seek," the boy is hiding behind a rock, a smile on his face, and the tree is pointing to him with a long and leafy branch. Notice how happy he is, because it changes later in the book as he grows older.
3. The little boy carves a heart into the tree's trunk. What does it say inside the heart?

Answer: M.E. + T.

The boy loved the tree very much. On the previous page we see them hugging each other. "The boy loved the tree... very much." And that is when he engraves the heart into the base of the tree's trunk.
4. And suddenly the story turns sad. The boy grew older. Another heart is carved into her trunk. What does this one say?

Answer: M.E. + Y.L.

During this scene we see two pairs of legs sitting behind the tree: the boy's legs and a female's legs. Things are changing for the boy, but not for the tree. The only thing new for the tree is that now she is lonely.
5. It says "And the tree was often alone." After a while, the boy comes back, now an adult, and he asks for money. What does the tree give him?

Answer: her apples

When the boy comes back, the tree tells the boy to climb her trunk and swing from her branches and be happy, just like it used to be. But the boy says that he is too big, and that he wants to "buy things and have fun." He wants money, he informs the tree.

The tree tells the boy she has no money, but she has apples the boy could sell for money. So the boy collects the apples and carries them away, and "the tree was happy," even though there was nothing in this little exchange for her.
6. Once again, the boy stays away for a long time. What does he ask for when he comes back this time?

Answer: A house

He comes back again, and once again declines the tree's offer to climb her trunk and swing from her branches. He tells her he now wants a wife and children, and a house to keep him warm. So the tree says that he can take her branches and build a house. So he does, and the tree was happy.
7. The boy comes back as an older man. He tells the tree that he is "too old and sad to play." He tells the tree that he wants a boat to take him far away. What does the tree give him this time? Her _______.

Answer: trunk

The tree tells him to "cut down [her] trunk and make a boat," and then he "can sail away... and be happy." The tree seems to hesitate after "sail away." She knows that this would take the boy far away from her, perhaps forever. But still, the tree is happy. Notice how the only heart left now on the stump is the M.E. + T. heart. The M.E. + Y.L. heart is gone with the trunk.
8. The boy comes back again after a long, long time. He is extremely old. What is the last thing he gets from the tree?

Answer: A place to rest

When he comes back, the tree tells him that she has no trunk to climb, or no branches to swing on. She has nothing left but a stump. He tells her that all he needs is a quiet place to sit and rest, so he sits and rests on her stump, the heart with M.E. + T. still there.
9. In the end, the tree is sad.

Answer: False

The tree is only sad when the boy is not there. However, the boy is there, sitting and resting on her trunk in the end. The last words of the story are "and the tree was happy."
10. "And when he was tired, he would sleep in her ________". What's the missing word?

Answer: shade

When he was still a little boy, the tree provided everything for him. She provided rest for him then, he she still does at the very end. Thanks for taking my quiz and I hope you enjoyed it.
