Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This sport, similar to pairs figure skating, involves partners who skate to music. What winter sport is shown on this Hungarian postage stamp?

Answer: Ice dancing

Ice dancing originally required that the two skaters be in a dance hold for the entire routine, but this has been made less stringent lately. One of the most famous ice dancing pairs was Jayne Torvill and Chrostopher Dean, who skated a routine to the music of Ravel's 'Bolero' at the 1984 Winter Olympics that got a perfect score of 6.0 for presentation from every judge.
2. This piece of equipment is used for a game played on a sand court, with players wearing skimpy swim suits. What Olympic event uses this ball?

Answer: Beach volleyball

If you look closely at the ball, you will see that it has a volleyball net included as part of its decoration. The fact that it is approved by FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball), the governing body for the sport, is another clue. Beach volleyball is similar to indoor volleyball, but there are some differences.

The most obvious difference, aside from the court surface, is that indoor volleyball teams have six players, while beach volleyball teams have two.
3. Competitors in this sport throw themselves into the air, and hope to land in the water below. In what Olympic sport might they be participating?

Answer: Platform diving

Diving involves propelling oneself from an elevated board or platform, and producing stylized body positions before landing in the water below. Springboard divers start at heights of 1.0 or 3.0 metres. Diving competitions from higher heights use solid platforms, usually of height 5.0, 7.5 or 10.0 metres.
4. These athletes are warming up to compete in the uneven bars, the balance beam, the vault, or the floor exercise (where they will perform back flips, handstands, and other feats of bodily contortion). What is the name for this field of athletic competition?

Answer: Artistic gymnastics

The events listed are those undertaken in women's gymnastics, since it was women's thighs shown in the image. Men's artistic gymnastics has different events: pommel horse, stationary rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar, and (the only one shared with the women) floor exercises.
5. This postage stamp shows an athlete participating in which Olympic event?

Answer: Pole vault

Pole vaulters carry a long pole, usually made of fiberglass or carbon fibre, which they use to propel themselves into the air by placing one end in a blockhole. Using the flexed pole to help lift them higher, they then try to jump over a horizontal bar. The first athlete to jump over a bar whose height was at least 6m (a bit over 19 ft 8 in) was Sergey Bubka, who did it in 1985.
6. This diagram shows the court used by athletes who belong to such teams as the Boston Celtics and the Melbourne Tigers. In what sport do they compete?

Answer: Basketball

Basketball is an indoor sport played around the world. It was originally developed by a Canadian, James Naismith, who was working in Springfield, Massachusetts in the USA. Each team has five players, who try to make the basketball pass through the hoop at their scoring end of the court.
7. The athlete shown on this postage stamp is engaged in which of these field events?

Answer: Shot put

The shot put involves throwing (or putting) a heavy metal sphere as far as possible. The other events also involve throwing something: the discus is a flat circular disc, the javelin is a spear; the hammer throw involves a metal weight, but it is on the end of a wire that is spun around to launch it, not pushed from the chest as shown on the image.
8. This man, who might have been participating in the Tour de France, certainly wasn't afraid to get his thighs in your eyes. In what competitive sport did he compete?

Answer: Cycling

The image shown is that of Michel Jacquelin, a Belgian cyclist who achieved some notable success in the 1960s including some stage victories in the Tour de France. There are a number of different types of cycling race, both track and road races. The Tour de France, which takes nearly a month (2013 dates are 29 June - 21 July) is one of the most prestigious road races of them all. Jacquelin placed in a number of stages of the 1967 Tour de France.
9. This stamp shows a player in a team sport where each team has seven players, including a goalkeeper. By what name is the game of Water Ball more commonly known?

Answer: Water polo

Water polo does not resemble polo, which is a game played on horseback. In fact, it is more like soccer played in water, using hands to throw the ball instead of feet to kick it. Players wear colored caps, so it is easier to make out who is on each team when players are trying to decide to whom they should throw the ball.
10. These players are participating in a form of football where it is common for one player to launch himself off another player's body to leap high in the air and grab the ball. What football code is this?

Answer: Australian Rules Football

Catching a ball that has been in flight for a distance of over 15 metres is called a mark, and the player who catches it is given a chance to regain his balance, and kick the ball with nobody any closer than the man who stands 'on the mark', at the spot where the catch was taken.

A really high leap, usually using an opponent's body as a springboard, in order to take such a catch is called a specky, short for spectacular mark. As you can see from the photo, it can really involve getting thighs and eyes into close proximity!
