RMS Lusitania was another passenger liner which was sunk by a German submarine in World War I. The sinking of the Lusitania was thought to have contributed to the entry into World War I by the United States of America since there were a number of American citizens on board when it was sunk.

The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14th October 1066 between the Norman-French Army of Duke William II of Normandy and an English Army under King Harold II. The battle was won by William who later became known as William the Conqueror. The brave King Harold was killed during the battle.

Although the Great Fire of London was a disaster which destroyed 13,000 homes and 89 churches with the loss of a number of lives there were some eventual benefits. The city was rebuilt with wider streets and stronger buildings. Many of the rats carrying the dreaded bubonic plague were killed in the fire.
There was a monument built to commemorate the fire and this can be seen to this day to remind people of what happened. This landmark known simply as The Monument is said to be placed such that if it should ever fall over it would point to the exact spot where the fire began.
