The production of baseball cards began in the 1860s. A variety of companies gave away the cards to promote merchandise they were selling. The T206 Honus Wagner baseball card is the most valuable and sought after sports card ever made. A mint condition Wagner card was bought by a private collector for 2.8 million dollars in 2007.

In 2012 an Ohio man discovered a batch of old baseball cards in an attic valued at over 3 million dollars. The batch included a near mint Honus Wagner and 16 near mint Ty Cobbs cards.
