Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your weird Aunt Petunia comes to visit and gives you a plant for your room. It has pretty green leaves and it's in a pot full of dirt. What do you think you should do with it?

Answer: Put it near a window and give it some water.

Most plants need light and water to grow strong and healthy. Sometimes plants like a bit of fertilizer to help them grow as well.
2. What kind of plant is this, anyway? How can I find out about it?

Answer: All of these are good ideas.

There are LOTS of different kinds of plants, but also lots of places to find out more about them. With a web site or a book with good photos of plants, you can find out about your plant and learn how to take good care of it.
3. I found out my plant is a Swedish Ivy! My info says to keep the soil "evenly moist". What does that mean?

Answer: Give it enough water so the dirt feels just barely damp all the time.

"Evenly moist" means to keep the soil a little damp all the time. Every day you should poke your fingertip a little way into the soil to see if it's dry. If it is, it's time to water.
4. I forgot to water my ivy for a LONG time and today my whole plant is droopy! What's going on?

Answer: It has wilted, but you can probably fix it.

When a plant like a Swedish Ivy doesn't get enough water, it will flop over and maybe start to look a little yellowish. That's called wilting. If you leave it like that for too long, it'll die. It needs water to fill up its stems and leaves so they aren't droopy. If your plant wilts, you should water it right away.
5. Yikes! I put my ivy in direct sunlight and now some of the leaves look dry and brown. What do I do?

Answer: Put it where it'll have light, but not right in strong sun.

Plants have to get the right amount of light and sunshine. Too much or too little will make your plant less healthy. Swedish Ivy does best with lots of light, but not sitting right in the sun all day.
6. I'm having so much fun taking care of my ivy, my mom said I could buy another plant: a cactus. She told me to be careful of the spikes on it. It's very cool-looking. I'm going to treat it just like my ivy, right?

Answer: No

Every plant is different, and cactus plants are REALLY different. They grow in the desert where it's hot, dry and sunny. Swedish Ivy comes from humid, tropical East Africa. You'll need to treat these two plants differently.
7. So what conditions are good for a cactus?

Answer: Lots of sunshine, very little water.

Try to make it as much like a desert as you can. Stick your cactus in the sun and forget about watering except once in a while (they're VERY easy to tend!). You can find out exactly what your kind of cactus needs the same way you learned about your ivy.
8. Wow! Both my plants have flowers! What do I do now?

Answer: Leave them on the plants and enjoy them while they last!

Just leave them alone. Cactus flowers often last for months. The ivy flowers are tiny and what growers call "insignificant". When the flowers die, remove them gently from your plant (you might want help with the cactus flower so you don't get stuck by its spikes!).
9. My ivy grew really fast and it's too big for its pot. What do I do?

Answer: Re-plant it in a bigger pot.

One good way to fix this is to put the plant in a bigger pot with extra dirt added to it. You might want a grown-up to help you with this. If you can, do it outdoors. Your family might not like you playing with dirt inside!
10. Hey, Aunt Petunia is back and she said, "You've got a green thumb!" My thumb's not green! She's weird, what is she talking about?

Answer: Having a "green thumb" means you're good at taking care of plants.

A "green thumb" is a good thing! It means you're doing a great job with your plants! Maybe your Aunt Petunia isn't so weird after all...
