Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Middle Earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien, which enormous castle is occupied by the Dark Lord Sauron?

Answer: Barad-dûr, the "Dark Tower"

Sauron's castle, Barad-dûr, as described in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Silmarillion" as gigantic. It is built as a fortress to protect the Dark Lord it harbours. It is found near Mount Doom in Northwest Mordor.
2. According to whose works, Cair Paravel is the seat of thrones of High King Peter the Magnificent, High Queen Susan the Gentle, King Edmund the Just, and Queen Lucy the Valiant?

Answer: C.S. Lewis

Lewis imagined the fictional castle Cair Paravel as the place where the kings and queens of Narnia rule in the seven-volume series "The Chronicles of Narnia." The castle derives its name from the Old English meaning "a lesser court."
3. In the Star Wars universe, where does Darth Vader go to kick back, when he is not carrying out the evil orders of the Emperor?

Answer: Bast Castle on the planet Vjun

Darth Vader's Bast Castle was a safe haven where the lord was guarded both by troopers and by the rugged geography surrounding it. Over it was projected a shield which warded off planets from outside the planet. The doors to the castle were "lightsaber-proof."
4. The author of Ivanhoe (1820) describes England in the 1190s using some real (e.g. the castle Ashby-de-la-Zouche) and some fictional (e.g. Front-de-Boeuf's castle Torquilstone) castles. Who wrote Ivanhoe?

Answer: Sir Walter Scott

The setting of South Yorkshire is certainly real, as are the cities of Sheffield and York. The Norman castle Ashby-de-la-Zouch was built in the 12th Century. Scott invented Torquilstone (both the castle and its name); it was where Front de Boeuf imprisoned Rowena, Rebecca, and Isaac.
5. In both the book and the movie of the same name, how does "Howl's Moving Castle" move?

Answer: Walks on mechanical chicken legs

According to the novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones and the 2004 anime movie written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Howl's Castle moves on giant chicken legs. It is difficult to attack a castle which runs quickly away. The American release of the Japanese film was dubbed by Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bacall and Christian Bale. The movie is strongly anti-war, pro-feminist and respectful of people of advanced years.
6. What is the name of the seat of Clarence Threepwood, the 9th Earl of Emsworth, in the novels and stories written by P.G. Wodehouse?

Answer: Blandings Castle

Blandings Castle was introduced in 1915 and appears as a setting for numerous books and stories through 1975. It is the home of Lord Emsworth (and of his prize pig, the Empress of Blandings). Quite fictitious, Blandings is the quintessential English country house. It sits atop a knoll in the Vale of Blandings in Shropshire, near the town of Market Blandings (where the pubs are).
7. In the 1967 Alistair MacLean novel and the 1968 film "Where Eagles Dare" which was based on it, what was the name of the castle where the Nazis took the imprisoned American brigadier general?

Answer: Schloss Adler

When Brigadier General George Carnaby is captured when he airplane is shot down, he is taken to Schloß Adler, a mountaintop fortress in the Alps of southern Bavaria. The novel and movie are about the attempt to rescue him. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood star. The scene in which a fight takes place atop a swaying cable car high in the air is tense and memorable. For the motion picture, the castle scenes were filmed at Festung Hohenwerfen, in Werfen, Austria.
8. In "The Sword in the Stone," the first volume of "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White, where does young Arthur (also known as "Wart") live?

Answer: All of these are correct

Sir Ector takes in Arthur to raise and "eddicate" with his son Kay. Their lands and home are located in the "Forest Sauvage." This is the Wart's warm and comfortable home (he had a feather bed) until he leaves for London. In the legends, Sir Ector is sometimes called sometimes Hector or Antor or Ectorius.
9. In the Marvel Comics, where is the fortified residence of Doctor Doom known as Castle Doom located?

Answer: Doomstadt, the capital of Latveria

Not to be confused with his castle in upstate New York (the one with the crocodiles in the moat), Castle Doom is located in Latveria, the country ruled by Doctor Doom, in the former capital city of Hassenstadt, somewhere in Eastern Europe. Castle Doom is heavily fortified, both with magic and with weapons.
10. Back in the beginning of video games for home computers, Muse Software produced a stealth-based shooter for the Apple II which involved a Nazi German castle. What was the name of the game/castle?

Answer: Castle Wolfenstein

First released in 1981, Castle Wolfenstein was a crude but popular shooter for the Apple II, the Atari 8-bit and the Commodore 64. Numerous sequels follows in which good guys crept through a medieval castle in World War II Nazi Germany. The goal was to find and steal secret war plans and to get back out alive.

The longer one lived and the more successful, the higher one's military rank, all the way to Field Marshall.
