Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a cliche commonly used to describe "the perfect guy"?

Answer: tall, dark and handsome

"Tall, dark and handsome" is a cliche that has been used to describe a Prince Charming type. Mae West spoke the phrase about Cary Grant in the movie "She Done Him Wrong" (1933), and the line became a movie title in the 1941 movie that starred Cesar Romero.
2. A little known contender that makes a good showing can be described as a dark ___.

Answer: horse

The expression was used in horse racing to describe a horse that was not known to gamblers and was difficult to place betting odds upon. It generally means a contender about whom little is known, who then unexpectedly wins.
3. Who was called the "Dark Horse" of the Beatles?

Answer: George Harrison

Harrison was nicknamed the "dark horse" of the Beatles because his visibility as a songwriter and vocalist increased later in the Beatles' career. He named his solo label Dark Horse Records.
4. In the 1967 film "Wait Until Dark", Susy Hendrix (portrayed by Audrey Hepburn) is confined to a wheelchair because of an auto accident.

Answer: False

Susy was blind as a result of an accident. Susy's life was threatened by a group of criminals who believed she had hidden a doll used by them to smuggle heroin into the country. "Wait Until Dark" was one of the most popular movies of 1967.
5. Where did Eddie and the Cruisers say "nothing's gonna save ya from the love that's blind"?

Answer: On the Dark Side

"On the Dark Side" was written for "Eddie and the Cruisers", a 1983 movie about a New Jersey bar band and the mysterious death of Eddie Wilson. In the film, the song becomes the band's big hit and leads to a second album and a conflict with their record company. Eddie crashes through the railing going over the Stainton Memorial Causeway and is declared dead even though his body is never recovered.

The Palace of Depression was a junkyard "castle" that Eddie visited often as a child.
6. What expression can be used if you are deliberately not told something or are kept uninformed?

Answer: kept in the dark

The English idiomatic phrase "kept in the dark" refers to someone being unaware of a certain situation or ignorant of certain factors. This is one of many similar phrases that use the metaphor of visual darkness for secrecy or lack of awareness. If someone is being kept in the dark, he or she is not being informed about something when they should be.
7. What beloved canine began his novels with the phrase, "It was a dark and stormy night..."?

Answer: Snoopy

The phrase became synonymous with the Victorian melodramatic style, of which Sir Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton's many works provide numerous examples. Cartoonist Charles Schulz had Snoopy use this phrase because it was a cliché. It was also used as the opening line in the 1962 novel "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle.
8. In the "Harry Potter" series, which former student and close friend of Lily and James Potter later became a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts?

Answer: Remus Lupin

SPOILERS:

James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew were four friends, also known as the Marauders, who joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War.

Sirius also became the godfather of Harry Potter. When Pettigrew betrayed the Potters to Voldemort, Sirius sought to exact revenge on Pettigrew. However, Pettigrew was able to frame Sirius for his betrayal of the Potters, the murder of twelve Muggles, and the staged his own before Sirius could accomplish this.

Lupin taught Harry how to conjure a Patronus. He resigned from Hogwarts after Severus Snape revealed to the public that Remus was a werewolf.

Professor Snape was the Potions Master. As a double agent during the Second Wizarding War, Snape was able to prevent Voldemort from learning the truth about his loyalties. Despite the opinions of most others, Albus Dumbledore trusted Snape for reasons that were kept between them both until their deaths.
9. A ___ in the dark is a hopeful attempt to hit an enemy that you can't see.

Answer: shot

The idiom could also mean a general attempt or a wild guess. Several films have been titled "A Shot in the Dark", including American films released in 1935, 1941, and 1964.
10. What is the usual color of the Dark Lady Rose?

Answer: crimson

The Dark Lady Rose was named for the mysterious Dark Lady of Shakespeare's sonnets. These loosely formed flowers, which open wide and hang elegantly, are reminiscent of peonies and are sometimes depicted on fabrics and wallpapers.
