Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following artists, which one did NOT record a song with 'yellow' in the title?

Answer: Prince

While Prince released 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Purple Rain', none of his songs had yellow in the title.

Elton John released 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', the Beatles had a hit with 'Yellow Submarine' while Brian Hyland is best known for his 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'.
2. What colour links an Australian opera singer, a flawless complexion and Bob Geldof?

Answer: Peach

The colour peach is a pastel shade of pink named after but lighter than the fruit. Peaches (Prunus ) are a fruit related to cherries, plums and almonds. Save for its fuzzy skin, it is identical to the nectarine.

Dame Nellie Melba GBE, was an Australian prima donna operatic soprano who inspired French chef Auguste Escoffier to create the dessert 'Peach Melba' in her honour. A 'peaches and cream' complexion refers to flawless, unblemished pale skin with rosy cheeks. Much like the fictional Snow White. Bob Geldof KBE, is an Irish singer, songwriter, activist and charity worker. He fronted the band Boomtown Rats then went on to become founder of the 'Band Aid' group, 'Live Aid' and 'Live 8' fundraisers for Africa. His second daughter, Peaches Honeyblossom, was born in 1989.

Spots, or more specifically, spot lights can be a reference to both Nellie Melba and Bob Geldof. While you can find spots on a complexion it wouldn't be flawless. And spots are a design, not a colour.
3. Some metals produce characteristic flames when burned, so if you wanted a red flame, which metal would you burn?

Answer: Lithium

The reason metals produce different coloured flames when burnt is the emission spectrum characteristic of the element tested.

Lithium produces a bright red or carmine coloured flame, as opposed to Tungsten which is green. Copper gives off a blue-green flame while sodium produces a strong yellow colour. As sodium is present in numerous metals, the flame is often viewed through a cobalt blue screen, which negates the sodium yellow, allowing the other colours to be visualised.
4. Who was Running Bear so enamoured with, he was willing to cross a raging river to reach her?

Answer: Little White Dove

'Running Bear' is a song written by J.P. Richardson Jr (aka 'The Big Bopper')and released by Johnny Preston in 1959. The track featured The Big Bopper himself on the background lyrics when it was released, seven months after his death in the plane crash that also claimed Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly.

The song is about Running Bear and his love, Little White Dove. It has similarities with 'Romeo and Juliet' in that the pair are from different tribes and therefore their love is forbidden.
5. Whoopi Goldberg won a best supporting actress Academy Award for her role in the 1991 movie 'Ghost'. What was the name of her character?

Answer: Oda Mae Brown

The premise of the movie 'Ghost' centres on the character, Sam Wheat who, after he is murdered, discovers that his partner, Molly, is in danger. In order to communicate with her he enlists the help of 'psychic' Oda Mae Brown who claims to be able to communicate with the dead. Of course, she only pretends to be able to speak with the dead, until Sam appears and she can 'hear' him. She reluctantly agrees to help him save Molly.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film was a box-office success and Goldberg won both the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting actress.
6. Erika Leonard wrote a piece of 'Twilight' fan fiction, but when she turned it into a novel, it became one of the fastest selling books of all time. What is the title?

Answer: Fifty Shades of Grey

Erika Leonard (aka E.L. James) was writing 'Twilight' fanfiction stories under the user name 'Snowqueen Icedragon'. While her stories have long since disappeared from the internet, a few copies of 'Master of the Universe' are still lurking in dark corners. This story is significant in that character names aside, parts of it read exactly like 'Fifty Shades'. So Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are simply non-vampire versions of Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan.

'True Blood' is a television series created by Alan Ball. 'Dark Lover' is vampire romance novel by J.R. Ward and 'Game of Thrones' by George RR Martin was made (very successfully) into a television series.
7. Aside from having a colour in their name, what common factor links a red-back spider, an Eastern brown snake and a red-bellied black snake?

Answer: Native to Australia

These three animals join the Eastern Grey and Red Kangaroos, the grey-headed flying fox, the red-necked wallaby and many other animals too numerous to mention, all native to Australia. While the bite from a red-bellied black snake is painful it is not generally fatal, unlike the eastern brown snake (or common brown snake) which is extremely venomous. Cousin to the eastern brown is the western brown snake which is the slightly less aggressive of the two. The red-backed spider's bite causes severe pain, nausea and patchy sweating but in 2017 was deemed non-fatal by the NSW Health's 'Snakebite & Spiderbite Clinical Management Guidelines'. However, young children, pregnant women, the elderly and immuno-compromised should still seek medical advice.

There are three types of snake in Tasmania, one of which, the white-lipped snake, fits nicely into this question.
8. What nickname, given to the New York Times, is also a character from the 'Harry Potter' novels?

Answer: The Grey Lady

The New York Times was first published in 1851, but the nickname didn't appear until 100 years later. The first mention of 'The Grey Lady' was in a 'Life' article on the 100 year anniversary of the paper titled 'The Grey Lady reaches 100'. It was written by Meyer Berger and appeared in the magazine's 17th September 1951 issue.

In JK Rowling's 'Harry Potter' franchise, the Grey Lady is the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw, daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founding members of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Lavender Brown is also from the 'Harry Potter' series, is a member of Gryffindor house and a onetime love-interest of Ron Weasley. Magenta Black (also from Harry Potter) never makes an appearance in the books or the movies, but is on the Black family tree. Violet Gray was a character in the 'Peanuts' comic strip who was initially one of the main characters but was then systematically pushed into the background.
9. If the standard colour of poppies is red, what colour is a Welsh poppy?

Answer: Yellow

The Remembrance poppy is the red flower most people think of when a poppy is mentioned. But the flower comes in a variety of colours. The Welsh poppy was first named Papaver cambrica (from Cambria- Latin for Wales) in 1753, but in 1814 it was reclassified as a different species (due to having a different shaped carpel) and so was renamed Meconopsis cambrica.

Poppies come in all colours from white through to red, with varieties of pink, purple, orange and even blue in the mix.
10. In 1983 the emotionally haunting 'I Was Only 19' was released. Which band can we thank?

Answer: Redgum

'I Was Only 19' was a narrative type song about a volunteer soldier in the Vietnam war and describes the physical and psychological trauma during and after the war. The song was written by Redgum lead singer, John Schumann, after hearing stories from returned Vietnam veterans Mick Storen and Frankie Hunt.

The accuracy of the lyrics fired patriotic support for the soldiers (and Navy and Air Force personnel) who served in the Vietnam War and pushed for a memorial to honour them. The song was also called 'A Walk in the Light Green' when it was performed live by Redgum. Royalties from the song go to the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, and also assisted the vets during the 1983 Royal Commission into the use of Agent Orange and other chemical weapons.
