1. I arrive at Charles de Gaulle airport and ask the taxi driver to bring me to Kilometer Zero. Where will he drop me?

Answer: In front of Notre Dame Cathedral

Kilometer Zero is considered the centre of Paris. It is the start point for French roads.
2. From my zero starting point, I decide I want to buy a map to help with my tour. I find a famous bookshop nearby on Quai Montebello. What is it called?

Answer: Shakespeare and Company

Shakespeare and Company is one of Paris' best known English language bookshops. It was here that James Joyce's "Ulysses" was published in the 1920s.
3. I buy a biography of Oscar Wilde. It tells me that he died in Paris...but in which dingy hotel?

Answer: Hotel d'Alsace

Famously Wilde said of this hotel that either the wallpaper or he had to go. The hotel has been re-named but still existing on Rue des Beaux Arts.
4. I go down to the river and hop on a boat to go to the Eiffel Tower. It is called a "Bateau Mouche". But what, I ask, does the name mean?

Answer: fly boat

Though the name means "fly boat", it is actually named this because the boats were originally made in Lyon in the area known as Gerland. Gerland was formerly known as la Mouche.
5. Arriving near the Eiffel Tower I have my pocket picked. I call a police officer but what is a Paris police officer called?

Answer: Police Nationale

Paris and big French cities are treated differently to smaller towns in France. The Gendarmerie are the force around the country but not as much in the big cities.
6. Luckily the authorities catch the thief and I have enough money to buy lunch. I want to go to the oldest restaurant in Paris. It is near the Odeon Theatre. What is its name?

Answer: Le Procope

Founded in 1686, this restaurant goes back to the era of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Voltaire, Balzac and Victor Hugo all dined here in what was the main literary cafe of its era.
7. Well-fed and feeling sleepy I decide to go to the movies. I find a small cinema which is showing old movies. The hero says to the heroine: "We'll always have Paris". I feel smug as I am in Paris with a very good lunch inside me. What movie was I watching?

Answer: Casablanca

This one does give a warm fuzzy feeling about Paris, so I included it. I can't guarantee that a trip to Paris will be interrupted by a German invasion to make it more memorable! ("I remember every detail, the Germans wore grey, you wore blue")....but enough about Casablanca.
8. Stepping out of the cinema, I get some fresh air and decide to use one of the free bicycles available on street corners in Paris. What is the service called?

Answer: Velib

The name is a mixture of the word for bike Velo and the word for freedom Liberte. It is a lovely way to see Paris if you take care.
9. I cycle across Paris to a large park. At the bottom of the park I find the tennis stadium where the French Open Tennis is played. Who is it named after?

Answer: A French pilot killed in the First World War

Roland Garros was a pilot who was killed very near the end of the first world war. Before the war he made the first non-stop flight across the Mediterranean. He used to play tennis at the stadium now named after him.
10. Exhausted by my day, I decide to get a taxi back to the airport. From the station near there I take the high speed train to the next country I wish to visit, Germany. What is the French high speed train system called?

Answer: TGV

PMU is the Paris Mutuel Urbain - the French state betting system.
SIDA is the French for the disease that is called AIDS in English.
SECU is an abbreviation for Securite Sociale, the French Social Security system.
The correct answer is of course TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) which translates as High Speed Train.
