Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most popular places in the world to take a mud bath is on the shore of which body of water, known for its extremely low elevation?

Answer: The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is located 1,388 ft. or 423 metres below sea level on the shores of the Middle East countries of Jordan and Israel. Most locations which are known for their mud baths have water that is very high in mineral content and the ground has volcanic ash. Mud baths have been used for centuries in many parts of the world as a treatment for small pox, arthritis, gout, and obesity.

It is also believed to clean impurities from the body and keep the skin from aging. Remember these facts when your mom catches you playing in the mud in the yard!
2. What was the name of the famous blues singer that was born with the name McKinley Morganfield?

Answer: Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters helped to transform the sound of rural soul music into a more urban style. His music electrified the sound of rhythm and blues in the 1940's and 1950's. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and is considered one of the most influential performers in the history of blues music.
3. "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" was an anti-war song written by Pete Seeger in 1967. That same year he performed the song on which 1960's comedy/variety show, which aired from 1967-1969?

Answer: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour

Pete Seeger sang this song on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967. Often considered an anti-war tune, it tells the story of a platoon of men training in a Louisiana river. The captain orders his men ever deeper into the river, despite repeated warnings by the sergeant.

In the end the captain drowns suggesting that he should have listened to those whom he was "leading". CBS did not like the political overtones of the song and banned the performance before the show was aired. Due to outside pressure, they later relented and the song aired on an episode in 1968.
4. Which of these things would you need to go mud bogging?

Answer: A large 4-wheel drive truck

Mud bogging is an off-road sport in which vehicles are raced through a pit of mud. It is very popular in some areas of the U.S. and Canada. The vehicles involved are usually large 4-wheel drive trucks with very large tires and other modifications. It is a dirty sport that allows grown men and women to play in a big mud puddle with their toys.
5. Which American animated television program would you be watching if you were being entertained by a character named Muddy Mudskipper?

Answer: The Ren and Stimpy Show

Muddy Mudskipper is a character on "The Ren and Stimpy Show" which debuted in 1991. He is depicted as a mudskipper, which is a small fish that can crawl out of the water and breathe air. He is portrayed as a grouchy comedian that has his own afternoon children's show.

While he is very funny on stage, he is verbally abusive to those around him and calls everyone that comes around "a lousy bum".
6. Which 1963 John Wayne western features a brawl in a mud-pit that involves most of the town as well as actress Maureen O'Hara?

Answer: McLintock!

The famous muddy fight scene in the movie "McLintock!" took over a week to film. It lasts about 8-10 minutes in the movie. It includes actress Maureen O'Hara sliding down in the mud pit dressed in all her Victorian era finery. In reality, the mud in this movie was not real mud but rather a substance known as bentonite.

This substance has a consistency similar to that of chocolate milk and is often used in oil drilling. This scene was messy, filthy and delightfully fun!
7. "Mud Men" is a British television show that focuses on the historical impact of which British River?

Answer: Thames

"Mud Men" debuted in 2011 on the History Channel and was hosted by Johnny Vaughn and Steve "Mud God" Brooker. The men are part of the Mudlarks Society. They hunt the shores of the Thames River searching for items that may have historical significance.

In the first year they recovered a regiment cap badge, some musket balls and some chain mail. The show also explores some of the historic occupations and manufacturing processes of the past.
8. Dr. Samuel Mudd was imprisoned in 1865 for his participation in which infamous deed?

Answer: The assassination of Abraham Lincoln

Dr. Samuel Mudd was an American doctor who treated John Wilkes Boothe after he broke his leg during his assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. While it is known that the two knew each other before the assassination, there is actually very little evidence that Mudd was involved in the murder or its planning. Nevertheless, he was convicted and imprisoned in 1865 for aiding and conspiring in the assassination.

He was granted a Presidential pardon by Andrew Johnson in 1869 after stopping the spread of yellow fever at the Fort Jefferson prison in the Dry Tortugas.

Despite intensive efforts by his descendants, his conviction has never been overturned.
9. What famous 20th century politician, who ran for president twice in the 1950's, made this wise quote; "He who slings mud generally loses ground"?

Answer: Adlai Stevenson

Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965) was the Democratic Party's nomination for President during the 1952 and 1956 elections. He was defeated by Dwight D. Eisenhower both times. He was also the 31st governor of Illinois and an Ambassador to the United Nations. Many a modern politician would do well to pay attention to his words of wisdom. Mudslinging is not a necessity.
10. Which of these options is the name of a delicious chocolate pie with a chocolate crumb crust and topped with whipped cream?

Answer: Mississippi Mud Pie

Mississippi Mud Pie is a delectable treat that originated in the southern United States after World War II. As with all pies, there are variations which include dark chocolate syrup on top of the whipped cream, and vanilla or chocolate cookie crust. I have also seen it served with pecans and marshmallows.

This divine dessert is not recommended if you are watching your weight, although I am sure that there is a low-cal variety out there somewhere. Indulgence in this type of mud can be very satisfying.
