Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the common name for the little animal officially called "Loris lydekkerianus"? It looks a bit like a bush baby.

Answer: Slender loris

Loris lydekkerianus is more commonly known as a slENDer loris. It's a little primate native to India and Sri Lanka. Nocturnal animals, they sleep in the day in groups, nestled in trees, then come out at night to munch on their favorite food, ants.

This is a very rough idea of what a slender loris might look like.
2. Actress Gwendoline Christie plays a distinguished character on HBO's "Game of the Thrones." What is the name of her compelling character?

Answer: Brienne of Tarth

GwENDoline Christie was born in West Sussex in 1978 and took up acting after an injury derailed her gymnastics career. On HBO's "Game of Thrones," Christie's Brienne represents honor, integrity, and strength in a world without laws. Christie can also be seen in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" (2015), and season 2 of "Top of the Lake" (2017).

This image represents Brienne of Tarth's strength though her armor would not have a dragon symbol on it, as the dragon symbol represents the House of Targaryen. The House of Tarth shield would be covered in suns and moons.
3. What is the name of the long-running BBC One show that portrays the lives of residents in the fictional borough of Walford?

Answer: EastEnders

EastEnders, created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland, premiered on BBC One in 1985. They hoped the show would attract the large audiences that watched another serial program, "Coronation Street," but would also draw in younger viewers with timely storylines. You could say that it worked - England's electrical power supplier learned they had to prepare for electrical surges during the show's commercial breaks, calculating that viewers would simultaneously plug in tea kettles during the short breaks. This phenomenon is called "TV Pickup."

This is supposed to be a picture of Brick Lane, a historical street in East London.
4. Land's End is a headland in Cornwall, a clothing retailer, and a park containing ruins of the Sutro Baths in what American city?

Answer: San Francisco

Lands End is a rocky, windy shore on the far west end of San Francisco, where Golden Gate Park reaches the Pacific. In addition to hiking trails and a secret labyrinth, Lands End contains the ruins of the Sutro Baths, a public swimming complex that opened in 1896. This majestic park had seven saltwater and freshwater pools with a wide number of slides, rings, and diving boards, as well as an amphitheater, over 500 private dressing rooms, and an ice skating rink. It closed for good in 1966 after a fire.

This picture is a loose interpretation of Lombard Street, also known as The Crooked Street, located elsewhere in San Francisco.
5. What is the definition of the fairly archaic word "shend"?

Answer: To shame, to revile

"ShEND" means to shame someone, or to revile or cause injury to them. It's not used often, though Chaucer used it in "The Wife of Bath's Tale," and Keats and Kipling both used it as well.

This image clue is several steps away from the answer. It's a picture of a cane, homonym for Cain, who was shamed for killing his brother, Abel.
6. Shel Silverstein wrote the poem "Where the ______ Ends." What word goes in the blank?

Answer: Sidewalk

Silverstein published a collection of poems and illustrations titled "Where the Sidewalk ENDs" in 1974. With its theme about enjoying the freedom that imagination provides, the book was a critical and commercial success and in 2012 it was rated in the list of "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." Silverstein was multi-talented, finding success in children's literature, cartooning, music, and scriptwriting. He wrote the song "A Boy Named Sue" which was popularized by Johnny Cash.

This image contains a sidewalk, albeit with other items as well.
7. The 1981 version of the movie "Endless Love" starred Brooke Shields. Which actor played the much smaller part of Billy?

Answer: Tom Cruise

"Endless Love" was Tom Cruise's film debut. Critics panned the movie but audiences responded to the teenage love drama, and the eponymous song from the movie by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie shot to number one on the Billboard charts and won many awards. Cruise played Billy, who gave one of the lead characters the dumb idea of starting a fire at his girlfriend's house in order to fake-save the family and thus curry favor with her father. It didn't turn out that way and the star-crossed sweethearts faced death, a disturbed mother, and prison.

This image is supposed to be of a life preserver, commonly found on cruise ships.
8. All professional sports games have to end sometimes. Which type of game does NOT depend on a clock to manage regular play?

Answer: Baseball

A professional baseball game is driven by the number of innings, not the clock. A standard game is made up of nine innings, though if there is a tie at that point, the game goes on until there is a decisive win. In 1984, the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 after a stunning 25 innings at Chicago's Comiskey Park.

Basketball, American football, and ice hockey may go into overtime, but they are routinely ruled by a timer.

The image here is of a diamond ring -- baseball is played on a diamond-shaped field.
9. In history, what effectively ended in 876 A.D.?

Answer: Roman Empire

Historians generally agree that the fall of the Roman Empire occurred in 476 A.D. when the last of the Roman emperors, Romulus, was overthrown by Barbarians. Not that it hadn't been plagued for centuries before -- it experienced political corruption, economic instability, and a wide variety of invasions.

In this image, If you take the capitalized letter in each word it spells out DCCCLXXVI, which is the year 876 in Roman numerals.
10. In 1987, an American rock band released a single titled "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." What is the name of this Athens, Georgia musical group?

Answer: R.E.M.

R.E.M. released "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" as a single in 1987 and as part of their album "Document" which was released in the same year. R.E.M. was comprised of Bill Berry on drums, Peter Buck on guitar, Mike Mills on bass guitar and providing backing vocals, and Michael Stipe as the lead vocalist. The four members were living in George in the early 1980s when they formed their band, which had considerable success over the next couple of decades. They officially disbanded in 2011.

This image is of a place where many people try to get into a Rapid Eye Movement (R.E.M.) sleep pattern.
