Answer: Sardinia

Sardinia has been ruled by many people over the centuries, before becoming part of Italy in 1861. The Carthaginians had trading posts there, before the ancient Romans took control of the island. Sicily, also Italian is the largest Mediterranean island.

The Holy Shroud is supposedly the cloth used to wrap Christ's body. It has been dated as originating in the fourteenth century, but there are some who do not accept this.

La Scala Opera House was opened in 1778. Maria Callas made her debut there in 1950.

Answer: Lombardy

Lombardy is situated in northern Italy. This is the industrial region of Italy. The major city of Milan is situated in this region, whose population at the beginning of the 21st century was just over nine million. The Latium region, in which Rome is situated, has a population of around five and a half million.

Answer: Ionian Sea

The Ionian Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean, which lies between Western Greece and southern Italy. Going northwards through the strait of Otranto you come to the Adriatic sea.
