Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To which of these locations would I travel if I wanted to visit the location of the world's first stock exchange?

Answer: Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is usually considered to be the world's oldest as it was established in 1602. In 2000, it merged with the Brussels Stock Exchange and the Paris Stock Exchange to form Euronext. Amsterdam is a beautiful city located on the Amstel River and it dates back to about the 12th century.

In the 17th century, an intricate network of canals was built and the city became one of the most important shipping ports in Europe. Baroque style architecture dominates the historic parts of the city. Friendly people, multiple forms of public transportation, and its world famous Red Light District, combine to make a visit to Amsterdam a wonderful vacation spot.
2. In 1992, which of the following locations became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Cambodia?

Answer: Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is a masterpiece of human ingenuity and creativity. It is a showcase of the Khmer civilization and its architecture, landscape design, and art. The flourishing Khmer civilization was once very powerful but has since disappeared, leaving behind this monument to its memory.

This magnificent location is found deep in the forest of Siem Reap in Central Cambodia. Angkor Wat is not just a temple found hidden in the jungle, but rather a sprawling urban area that was at least 200 acres and was the location of numerous buildings and complex systems of infrastructures including moats, libraries, and fortifying walls.

Intricate wall carvings are everywhere; this location is perfect for anyone wanting an exotic vacation.
3. Which U.S. state is ranked first if measured in geographical area?

Answer: Alaska

Alaska is, by far, the largest state in the United States. It is also the least densely populated, with a population that varies according to season. Tourism swells the population in summer, with very few tourists being able to bear the very harsh winter found in the state. Alaska is home to beautiful forests, glaciers, and a variety of wildlife that is not found in the lower United States.

It has an economy based on oil, natural gas, and fishing. To give an idea of just how large Alaska is, it might help you to know that it has a longer coastline than all the other U.S. states combined.

There are only eighteen countries larger than the state of Alaska. This wonderful wilderness is definitely bucket-list worthy.
4. In 1903, the first World Gymnastic Championships were held in which "bejeweled" Belgian city?

Answer: Antwerp

Antwerp is the diamond capital of Belgium and one of the loveliest cities in Europe. In 1903 it hosted the first World Gymnastic Championships. It is known for its flourishing diamond trade, large shipping industry, and unique architecture. The city is built on the edge of the Scheldt River, which is linked to the North Sea. Parts of the city have been occupied since at least the third century. Antwerp is a unique city, full of friendly welcoming faces and has one of the highest standards of living for any world destination.
5. In 1499, the noted Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda claimed to have led the first European expedition to which of these islands?

Answer: Aruba

Aruba is one of the Caribbean islands that make up the Netherlands Antilles. It was first described by the Spanish explorers Amerigo Vespucci and Alonso de Ojeda in 1499. The native Caquetios tribe were much taller than the Europeans which led to the description of Aruba as the "island of giants". Aruba was colonized by the Spanish for over a century while they searched for gold. Aruba has been under Dutch administration since 1636, the Dutch using it for years for livestock grazing.

The hot, dry weather does not lend itself to the growth of sugar cane, coffee, or any of the crops that required slave labor. Located in the southern Caribbean, Aruba has no rivers, and has a generally flat terrain.

The tourist industry is important to the island's economy, and Aruba has beautiful white sand beaches with unusual rock formations.
6. The South Pacific island of Aogashima was the first location to have an atomic weapon detonated on it.

Answer: False

Aogashima is an unusual volcanic island in the Pacific. It has never been used for any type of atomic weapon testing. The island is barely reachable except by boat. It has no harbor due to the fact that it is completely surrounded by steep rugged cliffs with no beaches. Most people reach the island by helicopter as it is too small for an airport. Before the helicopter was used, all the people and materials had to be carried up the sides of the steep cliffs.

There is not much to do in this Pacific paradise.

In the center of the island lies a natural geothermal sauna which is used to run a cooker which is used by all of those who live on this remote island. The population is less than 200 and declining. This natural geothermal sauna is also used as a public bath and for taking hot showers. Most of the wildlife is restricted to birds, lizards, turtles and insects. If you are wanting to be alone and enjoy peace and quiet, this might just be the place for you.
7. Which of these lovely areas was home to the first wife of Henry the VIII?

Answer: Aragon

Aragon is a community in northeastern Spain. At one time, it was a autonomous kingdom before being absorbed by Spain in the early 18th century. This picturesque region is home to the Pyrenean foothills and the Ebro River. A variety of dialects are spoken in the region, with Spanish being the only language spoken and understood by virtually all residents.

It has one of the lowest population densities in the country. Catherine of Aragon was the Queen of England from 1509-1533, and was the daughter of the King of Aragon, Ferdinand II and Isabella I, the Queen of Castile.

A devout Catholic, her refusal to divorce Henry VIII led to the religious schism between England and the Catholic Church.
8. Where would I have to visit if I wanted to see the Ashmolean Museum, considered by many to be the very first public Museum?

Answer: Oxford University

Located in Oxford, England, the Ashmolean Museum is often considered to be the first public museum, as well as the first university museum. Originally started by Elias Ashmole in 1677, it is home to a large collection of ancient pottery, coins, and oddities from around the world. What started out as a private collection, has grown into a unique museum that showcases artifacts of many kinds, many of which have been donated by other collectors of the rare and unusual.

It is just one of the beautiful museums that you can visit if you decide to make Oxford your next vacation destination.
9. Both "National Geographic" and Wikipedia list the Atacama as first in their descriptions of the world's driest, hot deserts.

Answer: True

Located in Chile and Peru the Atacama Desert is considered, by most experts, to be the driest hot desert on the planet. The area has been used in the film industry when filming scenes that are supposed to occur on desolate planets. It is often described as looking similar to the moon.

At the edges of the desert there is plant and animal life, but in the more central regions are areas which are incompatible with life. If you like to visit unusual landscapes, the Atacama might just be the location for your next trip.
10. Home of the first modern Olympics, within which one of the following locations was the city of Athens, Greece located?

Answer: Attica

The historic region known as Attica was centered around the great city of Athens. Located on the Attic peninsula, this ancient region was surrounded by the Aegean Sea. The whole history of ancient Attica is tightly interwoven with the city of Athens.

Athens is one of the world's oldest cities and has a recorded history of well over 3,000 years. It is considered by many to be one of the most important locations in Western civilization. Athens is home to the Acropolis which dominates the city, high atop a rocky outcrop. The city has multiple museums which house priceless antiquities of many kinds. The city has long hot summers, with mild, wet winters, which make visiting the city an agreeable venture all year around.
