Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll begin with the Antarctic. How many inches or millimeters is the largest insect in Antarctica?

Answer: One quarter of an inch (6 millimeters)

The largest insect is the midge, which is a species of fly. In fact, it's actually considered the largest land animal in Antarctica! Other "Antarctic" animals, such as penguins and seals, only partly subsist on Antarctica, surviving on the ocean as well.
2. Antarctica is home to several "ice shelves". One of them is called the Ross Ice Shelf. Most of the ice shelf lies within a region called the Ross Dependency, an area claimed by which country?

Answer: New Zealand

The Ross Ice Shelf is found near the Transatlantic Mountains. On the other side of Antarctica is the Ronne Ice Shelf, which is located near the Antarctic Peninsula. New Zealand's area of Antarctica includes two major scientific bases; Scott Base and McMurdo Station. The bases belong to New Zealand and the USA respectively.
3. Which of the following penguin species is NOT found exclusively in Antarctica?

Answer: Humboldt

The Humboldt penguin lives on the Pacific Coast of South America, often on rocky cliffs. The Adelie, Gentoo, and Chinstrap penguins are not the only penguins that live in Antarctica. Other species that make their home there include the Emperor, King, Macaroni, and Rockhopper penguins.
4. This well-known species of penguin is the only one to breed during the winter season in Antarctica. What penguin species is it?

Answer: Emperor

The Emperor penguin is also the world's largest penguin. It can be up to 4 feet, or 1.2 meters, tall, and weigh up to 90 pounds, or 40 kilograms. Emperor penguins starred in the movie "March of the Penguins".
5. Antarctica is home to a vast mountain range called the Transatlantic Mountain Range. The highest mountain in Antarctica is located here.

Answer: False

The highest mountain is located just south of the Ronne Ice Shelf. It is known as Vinson Massif, and it rises 16,860 feet, or 5,140 meters, above the 2.2-mile thick Antarctic ice. In other words, the ice is 4.5 kilometers thick.
6. A number of countries claim to own Antarctica. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Spain

Other nations that claim to own Antarctica include France, New Zealand, and Chile. In October of 1991, each of these countries agreed that for fifty years no attempts to remove resources from Antarctica would be made.
7. Now let's move on to the Arctic regions. The Arctic Circle is much closer to other countries and continents than the Antarctic Circle. In fact, a few countries, including Greenland, are partially engulfed by the Arctic Circle. How many countries/territories are partially engulfed, including Greenland?

Answer: Eight

Those countries/territories are: Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, the United States of America, Canada, and Greenland. The United States is considered partially in the Arctic because of Alaska. All together, there are eight countries and two continents in the Arctic Circle.
8. This migratory Arctic bird is believed to have the longest traveling route of any bird. What is the name of this aerial wonder?

Answer: Arctic Tern

The Arctic tern is very small, yet it travels from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again. It is said that in its lifetime this white bird will have flown the distance from the moon and back. Talk about getting physically fit!
9. On which of these places is the highest mountain in the Arctic Circle located? (Do not include mountains outside of the Arctic Circle, only inside).

Answer: Greenland

The highest mountain is Mount Gunnbjorn. This mountain is 12,139 feet, or 3,699 meters high. This is about 4,000 feet, or about 2,500 meters, smaller than Vinson Massif, Antarctica's highest mountain.
10. Jellyfish are known to live in warm oceans. Do any live in the Arctic?

Answer: Yes

If there's water, jellyfish can usually live there. It helps that their bodies are actually made up of more than 90 percent water, and they don't have brains, eyes, or hearts.
