Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Brazilian state, home to the city of Recife, includes the beautiful Fernando de Noronha archipelago?

Answer: Pernambuco

Fernando de Noronha sits more than three hundred kilometers off Brazil's mainland and, because of its unique ecological situation, the entire area of twenty-one small islands is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The location is part of Pernambuco, however, which is a narrow state that can be found on coastal northeastern Brazil. Home to the city of Recife, Pernambuco is a typically warm, equatorial locale known for Dutch and Portuguese influences.

It's the fifth-largest state in Brazil in terms of population (of twenty-six and one federal district, Brasilia).
2. One of Mexico's southernmost states, which of these is home to the Mayan city of Palenque and the Guatemalan border?

Answer: Chiapas

Found in Mexico's southeast, Chiapas is a state rich in history known for its picturesque Mayan ruins. Depicted is Palenque, the former Mayan city, which contains some of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in the country. But Chiapas isn't just history; the state is home to numerous freshwater lakes and rivers and shares the border with the jungles of Guatemala to the east.

The state's largest city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez which was established as far back as 400 BC as the village of Coyatoc. Chiapas is the eighth largest state in Mexico (by area) of thirty-one (plus Mexico City).
3. Found on the island of Borneo and surrounding the nation of Brunei, which Malaysian state would you visit to reach the city of Kuching?

Answer: Sarawak

Kuching is definitely the largest city in Sarawak, one of the three states in Malaysian Borneo (along with Sabah and Labuan) and the largest state of all thirteen in the nation. Known for its natural beauty, Sarawak is a state of tropical rainforests, cave systems, and national parks.

While Kuching sits at the far southwest of the state, the northern reaches of Sarawak completely surround the nation of Brunei. Sarawak is so large that on its own, it makes up a third of Malaysia's total area. Kuching, however, doesn't crack the top twenty cities in terms of population.
4. Bordering Bavaria, which Austrian state, home to several Olympic Games, is headed by the city of Innsbruck?

Answer: Tyrol

Although it's not the westernmost Austrian state (that would be Vorarlberg), Tyrol is close, spreading along the borders of southeastern Germany to the north, Italy to the south, and Switzerland to the southwest. Home to the city of Innsbruck, it's known for being entirely situated within the Eastern Alps near the Brenner Pass.

Its largest peak, Grossglockner, reaches nearly 3.8 kilometers into the sky. The state (and specifically Innsbruck) hosted the Olympics in 1964 and 1976.
5. One of the least-populated in the country, which U.S. state is home to Grand Teton National Park?

Answer: Wyoming

Wyoming's entire state population is smaller than nearly three dozen major American cities, and due to the rugged landscape of the state, many of its citizens are either spread over rural ranches and ranges or are situated in the city of Cheyenne. Grand Teton National Park has a rich history of local native activity and fur trade and was brought into the National Park system in the late 1920s.

It shares the state with the country's first National Park, Yellowstone. Despite the small population and nearly centralized location in the country, the State of Wyoming is the tenth-largest by area.
6. Found in the far east of Sudan, which of these states contains the granite Taka Mountains in its capital?

Answer: Kassala

Kassala, due to its spot in the east of Sudan, became an important spot for trade with the adjacent nation of Ethiopia upon being settled and built as a fruit-bearing settlement in the late 19th century. As time passed, the city of Kassala, constructed in the shadow of the Taka Mountains, connected with the nation's capital of Khartoum by rail and to the Red Sea in the states to the north.

In 1991, the eastern border switched from Ethiopia to the newly-formed country of Eritrea. Before Sudan split into two nations (Sudan and South Sudan), the nation had twenty-five states.

After the split, Kassala became one of eighteen.
7. Depicted is Nambung National Park, a short distance south of the town of Cervantes in which Australian state?

Answer: Western Australia

Nambung National Park, known for its limestone pinnacles, sits on the Indian Ocean and is one of the nation's many sites known for unique geological formations on a harsh and foreboding landscape. The nearby town of Cervantes was named in a roundabout way, as would be expected, after the "Don Quixote" author, Miguel de Cervantes. Western Australia is the largest state in the nation and takes up about a third of the area of the country.

Despite this, the population of the state is only about one in ten of all of Australia.

Its capital, Perth, is on the southwestern coast though the northern reach of the state stretches all the way up to Kalumburu and the Timor Sea.
8. Which of these Venezuelan states contains the remote Salto Ángel in Canaima National Park?

Answer: Bolívar

Bolívar State, named after famous South American liberator and military leader Simón Bolívar, is one of twenty-three states in Venezuela and definitely the largest in area, spanning most of the southeast of the nation. Most of the state is covered in jungle and national reserves including one of the largest national parks in the world, Canaima National Park, which features Angel Falls (or Salto Ángel), the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall.

It falls for nearly one kilometre before reaching the river at the bottom. Because of how remote Angel Falls really is, you would typically fly in from the city of Ciudad Bolívar to reach it.
9. Resting on India's Malabar Coast, which of these states known for its canals and waterways is home to the city of Thiruvananthapuram (formerly Trivandrum)?

Answer: Kerala

Though the Malabar Coast makes up most of India's western coast (along the Indian Ocean facing the Middle East), it actually makes its way through Karnataka and into Kerala to the nation's southern tip. Thiruvananthapuram is at the far south of the state. Dubbed 'The Evergreen City', its forests surround tech hubs, educational centres, and scientific research locations (including the Technopark).

India has twenty-nine states; Kerala is twenty-second in size.
10. Dresden is the capital of which German state containing the Elbe River (which actually starts across the border in the Czech Republic)?

Answer: Saxony

Germany has sixteen states and Saxony is the third-largest, containing Dresden and Leipzig amongst other locations. The image for this question depicts the Elbe River as it passes through Meissen though the Elbe also makes its way through Dresden and, on its way to the North Sea, Hamburg. Saxony has a long history which includes being a part of the Holy Roman Empire.

It makes up nearly half of the border with the Czech Republic and includes a rather popular German wine region known for dry Rieslings.
