McMurdo Station is the largest station located in Antarctica. It is home to more than 1000 researchers in the summer. The base is named after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo, who was the captain of the ship Terror. Terror was one of the first ships to explore Antarctica's coast.

Neumayer Station was built in 1981. It was rebuilt in 1992 because of ice movements. The base is named after Georg von Neumayer, who was a promoter of German exploration in Antarctica.
