Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Great Barrier Reef extends down the northeastern coast of which Australian state that is separated from the island of New Guinea by the Torres Strait?

Answer: Queensland

The capital of Queensland, which borders the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Carpentaria, is Brisbane.

Kingsland and Reefstate are not states--I made them up.
2. What is the correct order of the cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney from north to south?

Answer: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and Melbourne is the capital of Victoria.
3. What is the biggest city in Western Australia?

Answer: Perth

According to Wikipedia, Perth is the fourth-largest city in Australia. The city of Fremantle acts as a port for Perth.

Adelaide is in South Australia, and Hobart and Launceston are in Tasmania.
4. What is the biggest state of Australia (by area), and the second biggest sub-national entity (province, state etc) in the world?

Answer: Western Australia

The largest sub-national entity in the world is the Sakha Republic in eastern Russia. Western Australia is also home to many deserts: two of which are the Great Sandy Desert and the Gibson Desert.
5. What is the tallest mountain in Australia?

Answer: Mt. Kosciuszko

Mt. Cook is in New Zealand and though Ayers Rock is a very popular tourist destination, it is not very high.

Jaya Peak is also known as the Cartensz Pyramid, and it is the highest point of Indonesia (island of New Guinea). There is lots of disagreement in the mountaineering world as to which mountain (Kosciuszko or Jaya Peak) is the tallest mountain on the continent.

Incidentally, Jaya Peak is taller but it isn't in Australia so some people don't consider it part of the "Seven Summits", which include the tallest mountains on all other continents.
6. The Australian Capital Territory, which basically includes Canberra and some of the surrounding land, borders which other state?

Answer: New South Wales

The territory is completely surrounded by New South Wales, and the only function of Canberra is to house the nation's capital, as it is not a big city or a port.
7. Which state that has the cities of Launceston and Hobart is separated from mainland Australia by Bass Strait?

Answer: Tasmania

Tasmania is the only state that is also an island. Its capital is Hobart, and Launceston is its other major city.
8. The Gulf of Carpentaria borders two of Australia's states and/or territories. One is Queensland. What is the other one?

Answer: Northern Territory

The Gulf of Carpentaria, on Australia's northern coast, borders Queensland and the Northern Territory. The capital of NT is Darwin.
9. Which of the Australian states or territories is bordered by the Spencer Gulf?

Answer: South Australia

South Australia also borders all the other states and territories on mainland Australia, with the obvious exception of the A.C.T.
10. Which river, part of the longest river system on the continent, forms the natural border between the states of Victoria and New South Wales?

Answer: Murray River

The Murray-Darling River system is the longest river on the continent.
Eyre and Dumbleyung are names of Australian lakes, not rivers.
