Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The final battle of the Northwest Indian War took place in Ohio in 1794. What was the name of this famous battle, in which U.S. forces led by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne routed the Native American alliance known as the Western Confederacy?

Answer: Battle of Fallen Timbers

General Wayne's forces marched north from present-day Cincinnati, and encountered the Native American forces near present-day Toledo. The political aftermath of this decisive battle was the signing the following year of the Treaty of Greenville, under which the Native Americans ceded much of present-day Ohio to the U.S.

The Battle of Lake Erie was a naval battle in 1813 just off the coast of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. It was one of the most significant battles between the U.S. and Great Britain during the War of 1812. This battle is perhaps best known for Oliver Hazard Perry's famous report of the battle, "We have met the enemy and they are ours".
2. After Ohio became the 17th state of the U.S. in 1803, which city was made the first state capital?

Answer: Chillicothe

Located in southern Ohio, Chillicothe was the capital of Ohio from 1803 to 1810, when the legislature moved the capital to Zanesville for two years. The capital was then moved back to Chillicothe from 1812 to 1816, when it was moved to the more central location of Columbus. Marietta, located just across the Ohio River from West Virginia, is Ohio's oldest city.
3. Which Ohio River city, called "The Queen City", became, in 2004, the home to a museum dedicated to the Underground Railroad?

Answer: Cincinnati

With its strategic location on the Ohio River, which was the border between the North and the South, Cincinnati was a major stop for the Underground Railroad, which helped southern slaves migrate north to freedom. Cincinnati was the country's sixth-largest city in both the 1840 and 1850 census. With the advent of the railroad, the importance of water travel declined and Cincinnati began sinking in relative population, so that by the year 2000 Cincinnati was only 54th in population in the U.S.
4. The Ohio and Erie Canal carried much freight traffic from 1827 to 1861. It connected Lake Erie at Cleveland to which Ohio River city?

Answer: Portsmouth

When completed in 1832, the canal was 308 miles long and contained an amazing total of 146 locks. The arrival of railroads in the 1860s rendered the canal obsolete, and much of it was abandoned after serious flooding in 1913.

The other choices are Ohio River cities in states other than Ohio.
5. The first presidential library was opened in Fremont, Ohio in 1916. Which 19th-century president from Ohio is the subject of this library?

Answer: Rutherford B. Hayes

Besides the library itself, there is also a museum and the Hayes home, all of which are open to the public. It is well worth a visit!

It is interesting to note that all U.S. presidents from Calvin Coolidge through George W. Bush have libraries dedicated to their presidencies, but the tradition was started by the Hayes family, particularly Hayes' son, Webb C. Hayes, who gave the president's estate and personal papers to the state of Ohio as a memorial to his father.
6. Which Ohio city is known as the Rubber Capital of the World?

Answer: Akron

B.F. Goodrich started the first rubber company in Akron in 1869, and his business really took off after the invention of the automobile. Several other rubber companies then followed Goodrich's lead and also settled in Akron.

Toledo is known for glass, and Dayton for aviation.
7. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in which Ohio city?

Answer: Canton

Canton is the location where the National Football League was formed in 1920, and the Canton Bulldogs became one of the first teams in the league. The Hall of Fame in Canton was opened in 1963.

Reflecting Ohio's strong football tradition, other Ohio teams participating in the NFL's first season in 1920 include the Akron Professionals, the Cleveland Tigers, the Columbus Panhandles, and the Dayton Triangles.
8. When the 1990 census results became available, which city had replaced Cleveland as Ohio's largest city?

Answer: Columbus

Cleveland took over from Cincinnati as Ohio's largest city in the 1900 census, and at its (relative) peak in 1920 it was the fifth-largest city in the U.S., while Columbus was at that time only 28th. However, as manufacturing declined and the high-tech industries prevalent in Columbus grew, Columbus overtook Cleveland, so that by the 2000 census Columbus was 15th nationally and Cleveland had sunk to 33rd.
9. Which well-known cave system is located in Ohio?

Answer: Old Man's Cave

Old Man's Cave is in a very popular state park located in southeastern Ohio in the area known as Hocking Hills. It is well worth visiting and exploring.

Carlsbad Caverns is located in New Mexico, Mammoth Cave is in Kentucky, and Jewel Cave is in South Dakota.
10. Ohio has been known as a "swing state" politically, meaning it almost always votes for the eventual winner in presidential elections. Who are the only two losing presidential candidates to win Ohio's vote in the 20th century?

Answer: Thomas Dewey in 1944 and Richard Nixon in 1960.

Ohio is an interesting blend of industrialized cities, which tend to vote Democratic, and rural agricultural areas, which tend to vote Republican. Throw it all together and you have a state which can go either way in political elections.
