1. Hefei is the capital city of Anhui Province. What lake is the city situated by?

Answer: Chao Lake

Chao Lake, also known as Chao Hu, is the largest lake located wholly within Anhui, and is in the top five largest freshwater lakes of China. It is just over 30 miles (50 km) long, and approximately 15 miles (20 km) at its widest. It is not a relatively deep lake, with an avearge depth of 8 (2.5 m) feet, a maximum depth being just over 15 feet (5 m) deep.

Hefei is a major city worldwide in terms of scientific research and discovery. The University of Science and Technology of China, and Anhui University as well as other institutions are located in the city.

Answer: Xidi and Hongcun

Xidi and Hongcun are both located within Yi County, Huangshan City, in the south of Anhui Province.

Hongcun is situated at the foot of a hill, beside a stream that forms two pools, with the Moon Pond located in the centre, and the other in the south of the village.

Mountains surround Xidi, which sits along and between three streams which all converge at the Huiyuan Bridge in the south of the village.

Ma'anshan is situated in the east of Anhui Province. Li Bai's tomb lies in Dangtu County, one of the three counties which are under the city of Ma'anshan's administration.

Hailing from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), Li Bai (701-762 AD) was a romantic poet greatly revered in China. His tomb is at the western foot of Qingshan Mountain, around 12 miles (20 km) southeast of Ma'anshan city. The tomb is constructed in the shape of a dome, via piled up square stones. Included within the tomb is the Taibai Temple, which boasts a white marble statue of Li Bai and a tablet from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) which details Li Bai's life and literary achievements.

Chizhou is located in the south of Anhui.

Meaning "Nine Glorious Mountains" in traditional Chinese, Jiuhua is often hailed as one of the four most important sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism, along with Mount Emei in Sichuan Province, Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province and Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province. According to legend, the poet Li Bai travelled to Mount Jiuhua and was inspired to write the poetry "Magic is divided into two branches, sacred mountain generates nine glories." There are at least four Buddhist temples on Mount Jiuhua.

Mount Jiuhua is dedicated to Ksitigarbha, a bodhisattva who watches over beings in the realms of hell, according to Buddhist tradition. The site features a 325 feet (99 meter) high statue of Ksitigarbha, that is gold in colour.

Fish and crabs are caught from Anhui's abundant lakes, and along the Yangtze River.

Anqing is situated in the south-west of Anhui, and was established during the Han Dynasty (206 BC -220 AD).

Located in the Yingjiang Temple, the Zhenfeng Tower, a striking pagoda, is situated in the middle of the city. It has stood since the Ming Dynasty, on the banks of Yangtze River. It remains a cultural landmark of Anqing, and features during the opening chapter of the renowned 1930 documentary about the Chinese War of Resistance, "Forty Million People."

Wang Huaizhong was a vice-governor of Anhui who was sentenced to death for corruption. He was executed via lethal injection in 2004. He sold blood illegally around Anhui in the 1990s, much of which was contaminated with HIV, causing the illness to spread throughout the province.

It is reported that it cost 390 million Yuan for Huaizhong to construct the airport. However, fewer than 1,000 people used the airport in 2002, two years before Huaizhong's execution.
15. Bao Zheng (999 - 1062) was a Chinese judge and politician, renowned for his fairness and honesty. Where in Anhui was he born?

Answer: Hefei

Bao Zheng was born to a schloar family in Hefei, specifically in Luzhou, (which is now Feidong County, Hefei, Anhui). When he became a judge he was never afraid of the ire of powerful families, often prosecuting (and executing) wealthy criminals even when their relatives threatened Bao Zheng's life.

When Bao Zheng died in 1062, he left a warning for his family that stated that if any of his descendants or family committed the act of bribery, they were banned from being buried in the family plot, no longer allowed in the family home and were no longer related to him, as they did not share his beliefs.
