Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are on a dark street in the city of Delhi near midnight. Suddenly, you see a lot of people with flowers rush around you shouting with joy. What has happened?

Answer: A socio-religious procession called Phulwalon ki sair is taking place

'Phulwalon ki sair' literally means "procession of flower sellers" and takes place in Delhi. A gala event of dance and merriment characterised by a parade of flowers is in honour of a resident saint of Mehrauli: Khwaja Bakhtiyar Kaki at Mehrauli. The saint espoused brotherhood between all religions. You are more likely to meet the same scenes in Indian cities than you would do in any city in the rest of the world.
2. You are walking down a maze of passageways in a castle with seemingly no end. Suddenly the candle goes out. Be careful - you could fall into the water. Where are you?

Answer: Bhulbhulaiya, Lucknow

Bhulbhulaiya, built in 1784 is a maze constructed supposedly to confuse enemies and surprise them. There are many staircases that will either lead to a dead end or through to another staircase. Unfortunately there are 489 identical doorways. You must take a guide and then try not to lose him.

There is a water body which one may fall into all of a sudden. It is enjoyable in groups of four to ten.
3. A dish made from meat and rice is famous around the world. If I am in a city of India called Hyderabad then what do the locals call it?

Answer: Biryani

Biryani is part of the Moghlai cuisine. Hyderabadi biryani has local flavours as well as that similar to Middle Eastern cuisine. This involves marinating the meat with spices including mace, cloves, and cumin with onion and ginger before dipping in yoghurt and cooking for prolonged periods over a low flame to enable the flavours of the spices to infuse into the meat and rice. Yummy!
4. There is a city in both India and Pakistan known as Hyderabad.

Answer: True

Hyder or Haider is a common name on both sides of the India-Pakistan border. 'Bad' denotes place. The Nizam of Hyderabad was the head of the former monarchy of Hyderabad and was one of the richest men in pre-independent India.
5. The erstwhile capital of British India, where will you find symbols of cultural and educational domination of the world of the early twentieth century?

Answer: Kolkata

It is also called City of Joy. Some of its famous buildings and landmarks include Victoria Memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral, Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Bridge and Vivekananda Setu, an 880m long bridge.
6. Where is the Hindi film capital of the world that is also the commercial capital of India?

8. Near which city is the deepest step well (Baoli) in India located?

Answer: Jaipur

Jaipur is the capital of the state of Rajasthan. The baoli is on the road to Agra and is breathtaking. Jaipur has also been dubbed 'The Pink City'. This is a result of a visit by Prince Albert in 1874 where the city was daubed in terracotta pink.

Tirupati is a temple town with a very famous temple devoted to Lord Venkateshwara, one of the many forms of Lord Vishnu, the Hindu God of Preservation. Accra is in Africa. It was meant as a confuser.
10. Which city is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited city of India?

Answer: Varanasi
