Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Several states border Colorado. Which state does not?

Answer: Texas

Clockwise, the states that border Colorado are New Mexico, Arizona (touching Colorado at Four Corners), Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Although Northern Texas lies close to Southeastern Colorado, the Oklahoma panhandle lies between the two. Colorado is located between 37 degrees North and 41 degrees North Latitude and between 102 degrees, 03 minutes and 109 degrees, 03 minutes West Longitude.

The picture shows the flag of the state of Texas.
2. Denver is known as the Mile High City and is the location of Coors Field (home of the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team). Which Colorado city, however, is the home of the professional baseball stadium that sits at the highest elevation of any in North America?

Answer: Colorado Springs

Security Service Field, home of the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox from 1988 to 2018, sits at 6,531 feet above sea level. The park seats 8,500 and cost 3.4 million dollars to build in 1988. Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the state, following only Denver. By comparison, Coors Field sits at about 5200 feet above sea level.

The picture shows an image of a coiled spring.
3. Coors Beer is a well-known product from the state of Colorado. Which Colorado community is the home of the Coors Brewing Company?

Answer: Golden

Coors Brewing dates back to the 1870s. Distribution of Coors beer was regionalized in the American west until the 1980s. Golden is the county seat of Jefferson County, Colorado. It was an early capital of Colorado Territory before that role was switched to Denver. The city was named for early settler and miner, Thomas Golden.

The picture shows a drawing of a metal bar with the inscription "Au", representing the chemical symbol for Gold.
4. Colorado is known for areas of excellent skiing during the winter months. Which ski resort town is not located in Colorado?

Answer: Killington

Killington, formerly known as Sherburne, is located in Vermont. Aspen, Vail, and Crested Butte are all located in western Colorado. Aspen, a former mining town, received its name because of the aspen trees in the area. Vail is a wealthy town known for its many festivals during the year. Crested Butte is a former coal mining town that is known as the "Last Great Colorado Ski Town."

The picture shows a tombstone, which might suggest someone who had been "KILLED", leading to Killington.
5. Grand Junction is one of the largest municipalities in Western Colorado. In which county is Grand Junction located (and is the county seat)?

Answer: Mesa County

While all of these counties are found in western Colorado, Grand Junction is located in Mesa County. Lying along the Colorado River, Grand Junction was incorporated in 1882. Farming, cattle herding, and fruit raising were important economic activities in the area around Grand Junction.

The picture shows a table. Mesa, in both Spanish and Portuguese, means table. Mesas are a geographic structure that are also called tablelands.
6. The majority of Colorado's population lies in the Front Range Urban Corridor which lies to the east of the Rocky Mountains. Which community is not part of this Corridor?

Answer: Montrose

Boulder, Fort Collins, and Loveland are all located in eastern Colorado in the Front Range Urban Corridor. Boulder is the home of the University of Colorado. Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University. Loveland was founded in 1877 and is known as the "Sweetheart City". Montrose is located in western Colorado.

The picture shows images of a heart (Loveland), a rock (Boulder), and a wooden building (Fort Collins).
7. Colorado, like many states, has more than one interstate highway passing through it. Which interstate highway can be found in Colorado?

Answer: I-25

One can travel on I-25 through Colorado for 305 miles from the Wyoming border in the north to the New Mexico border in the south. The highway travels through or near several of the large cities and towns of eastern Colorado. When I had occasion to travel from Cheyenne, WY to Colorado Springs, CO, I used this highway.

The picture shows a square with a number or pound sign inside of it. 25 is the only number of the four choices that is a square number.
8. The Continental Divide of North and South America runs through Colorado. Generally speaking, into which body of water do rivers in Colorado to the west of the Continental Divide generally flow?

Answer: Gulf of California

The largest river in Colorado is its namesake, the Colorado River, which flows through several states during its course of 1,450 miles, including Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. The final portion of the Colorado River's journey to the Gulf of Mexico lies between the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California. The Green River is an important tributary of the Colorado River and a small part of the river flows through the northwestern part of Colorado. While some rivers that flow through Colorado, including the Rio Grande River, flow into the Gulf of Mexico, these rivers generally do not run west of the Continental Divide.

The picture shows an outline of California, suggesting the Gulf of California.
9. Several military bases can be found in Colorado. Which military base - named for a important figure in the history of the western United States - can be found within Colorado's borders?

Answer: Fort Carson

Fort Carson is found near Colorado Springs, CO. The US Army installation covers over 137,000 acres. It is the headquarters of several army units including 4th Infantry Division, the 10th Special Forces Group, and, the 71st Ordnance Group (EOD). The base is named for 19th Century US Army scout Christopher "Kit" Carson, who traveled through much of the western United States, including Colorado, during his lifetime.

The picture shows a picture of a wheel that looks as if it could belong to a car.
10. Colorado is a land of high elevations. On the border of which state does Colorado's lowest elevation lie?

Answer: Kansas

Specifically, the low point is on the banks of the Arikaree River, which lies on the border between Colorado and Kansas. Even this "low" point is relatively high at 3,317 feet above sea level. The HIGH point of elevation in the District of Columbia and 18 US states is lower than this. Much of the area around the Arikaree River is a protected area under the Colorado Natural Areas Program.

The picture shows a hand making the sign for the letter "K" in American Sign Language, representing Kansas.
