Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is the LONGEST river in France?

Answer: Loire

As David Crystal in his Cambridge Factfinder mentions: Loire is longest with 633 miles - Seine..well Paris is on the Seine. Rhone passes by Lyon and has its river mouth near Marseille. Of course the vineyards of the Cotes du Rhone may slow down your speed. Garonne has its river mouth near Bordeaux (more vineyards..)and its main stop-over is Toulouse.
2. What is the present-day name of the country that was born from a merger between British Togoland and Gold Coast?

Answer: Ghana

British Gold Coast and British Togoland merged in 1957. It was the first British colony in Africa to achieve independence. Capital: Accra.- Ivory Coast or Cote d'Ivoire: its neighbour to the west. Capital Yammousokro, in replacement of Abidjan. - Benin: nominal capital Porto Novo. Political and economic capital: Cotonou.- Nigeria: civil war in the late sixties. Capital Abuja. Main port: Lagos.
3. What African country is Lake Volta in?

Answer: Ghana

Upper Volta is now called Burkina Faso and has Ouagadougou as its capital. It has the Red Volta and the Black Volta river sources but no White Volta nor any Volta Lake. Cameroon (capital: Douala); its main river is the Sanaga but no Volta. Ivory Coast: its capital is on the Banama, but no Volta here either. Ghana has no fewer than three Voltas: Black, White and Red and they all flow together into Lake Volta.

Their common river mouth is near Ada.
4. Lambarene became famous because of Dr.Schweitzer. What African country is it situated in?

Answer: Gabon

No, that does not mean yet that Lambarene is Gabon's capital, because that would be Libreville. Equatorial Guinea is north of Gabon and a lot smaller. Congo Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo) is the smaller twin of Big Brother Congo Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo). Central African Republic was once an Empire, when it still was ruled by Jean Bedel Bokassa.
5. Where in Africa is Mafia Island?

Answer: Tanzania

Well, the question was not where do you find the largest number of mafiosi per square kilometer.- Apart from having had Muammar al-Gadaffi as a charismatic colonel since 1969 , that country has towns such as Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk. - Congo Kinshasa: hard to know what its present frontiers are. Sierra Leone:capital Freetown. Hard to know what it means to be free here..Anyway quite a few got shot for free in this slightly chaotic place
6. What is Zanzibar to the country of Tanzania?

Answer: island off the coast

Though it still has the larger part of the government buildings , Dar-Es-Salaam, the Port of Peace, is not any longer the designated official administrative capital.Since 1996 the National Assembly has moved to Dodoma ,a less well-known city. - After first world war the Germans left here .There followed a period under the British. In the sixties de-colonisation happened here as well and in 1964 the separate entities of Zanzibar and Tanganyka made a deal and became a joint venture under the name of Tanzania.

After a period as a one-party system,opposition parties were allowed from 1991.
7. What's the new Russian name of Stalingrad ?

Answer: Volgograd

Gorkiy was the Soviet name for Nizniy Novgorod. Maxim Gorky, the Soviet writer, was born here. Just as his buddy Joseph Stalin he replaced his original name: Aleksei Maximowitch Peshkov by something more 'revolutionary'.. - It would not be Russia if there did not pop up some other town with the same name elsewhere too, so south of Sankt-Peterburg you will find a Novgorod without the Nizhnyi. Nov-gorod=new town. - Yeltsinograd ..that still may happen in the future and we once might walk the Putinskaja in the new town of Yeltsinograd. Volvograd could be Sweden but Russia returned to Stalingrad its old name of 'town on the Volga'.
8. Which ex-Soviet Republic had a few problems with its regional areas Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia?

Answer: Georgia

Never seen TV-pics of Gorby's ex-Foreign Secretary Eduard Shevarnadze, having to fight for his life against Mr Gamsakhurdia's men ? - Belarus or White Russia, with Minsk as its capital is still very friendly to the ex-Red Russia. The Azeris had a bit of a tiff with the Armenians but neither Ossetia nor Abkhazia are within their competence.
9. Which area is, from the point of view of physical geography, the outsider in this group?

Answer: Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the Canary islands,100 miles off the NW coast of Africa.- The others are deserts or parts of deserts in mainland Africa. The Tenere is part of Niger. The Kalahari Desert is shared by Namibia and Botswanaland. The Great Karoo is a plateau in South Africa's Cape Province, and is part of a desertlike area.
10. Which of these Caribbean islands is half French and half Dutch?

Answer: St.Martin

There is a Dutch Sint-Maarten (cap.Philipsburg) and a French Saint Martin on the same island. Bonaire is Dutch, even though the name sounds like French for 'good air'. Main city:Kralendijk. St.Vincent is neither French nor Dutch, and not even British, but strictly locally owned. Guadaloupe ..well ...just as Martinique, this is another Windward Island we probably better leave to the French.
