Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Capital is Bismarck

Answer: North Dakota

Bismarck is the second most populated city in North Dakota after Fargo and is the only US state capital named for a foreign statesperson. It used to be named Edwinton after the engineer Edwin Ferry Johnson, but a year later in 1873 it was changed to Bismarck after Otto von Bismarck.
2. Arm of the Atlantic Ocean

Answer: North Sea

The North Sea is an epeiric (shelf) sea that is located between Germany, Denmark, Britain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France. It connects to the Atlantic Ocean via the English Channel in the south and Norwegian Sea in the north. It has been used as a fishery, for its natural resources, and also to facilitate tourism between these popular European countries.
3. Robert Peary and Frederick Cook disputed who got here first

Answer: North Pole

Robert Peary purportedly visited the North Pole on the 6th of April, 1909. However, Frederick Cook disputed Peary's claim to being the first there, having claimed to have reached it in 1908. Since Peary was the only man on his trip trained in navigation, it's not even 100% certain that his claim to have reached the North Pole was accurate, since it was difficult for anyone else to verify.
4. Independent Communist state until 1976

Answer: North Vietnam

This former country, also known as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, was created after World War II. Vietnam 'til then was a French territory that had been occupied by the Japanese. Once they surrendered, Ho Chi Minh became head of the government, but the French returned to occupy Hanoi beginning the French Indochina War later that year.

It was not until 1976 that Vietnam fully reunified.
5. County in East Midlands of England

Answer: Northamptonshire

The county town is Northampton - who'd have guessed? - and it is landlocked in a central location in England. Other significant towns include Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough. The country has historically been known for its reservoirs and boot and shoe industries, although those industries have become somewhat faded over time.
6. Has six historic counties including County Antrim and Armagh

Answer: Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland was officially separated from Ireland in 1921. It has a complex and confusing political history, even for people who've lived through it. It occupies about one sixth of the land of Ireland and has six historic counties, though these are typically used colloquially and their official use has been in decline.
7. Former British protectorate in a large Asian island

Answer: North Borneo

North Borneo was founded in 1877-8 after land concessions were made by the Sultanates of Brunei and Sulu to Austro-Hungarian representative von Overbeck. It was formally established as a British protectorate in 1888, after the Spanish also made claim to the area.

It was used largely for logging purposes, and ultimately became part of Malaysia in 1963 after the issue of self-determination and decolonisation had become focal.
8. Zambia used to be known by this name

Answer: Northern Rhodesia

This was another colony of the British empire, named for Cecil Rhodes who expanded the empire into southern Africa. The protectorate was particularly valued for its mineral resources, especially copper. In 1926, an election system was developed, which gradually ensured the participation of more and more African people. It formally became independent on October 24th, 1964.
9. One of two major parts of New Zealand

Answer: North Island

The other major part alluded to is the South Island, which is the larger of the two. They are geographically quite different: whilst the North Island is known for its volcanoes and beaches, South Island is known for its glaciers, lakes and mountains. The North Island is also where most of the Maori people reside, in places such as Rotorua.
10. A Demilitarized Zone sits on one of its borders

Answer: North Korea

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a 160 mile long and 2.5 mile wide buffer zone between North and South Korea which crosses the 38th parallel at an angle. In spite of its name, it has been a particularly tense region; since its inception in 1953 there have been numerous military and civilian incidents as well as large military presences along each side of the line.
