Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Roughly how long is the entire length of the Appalachian Trail (commonly called the AT)?

Answer: 2,160 miles

Although due to relocation of sections of the trail vary the distance by several miles each year, this is generally the recognized length.
2. Where is the southern terminus of the AT?

Answer: Springer Mountain, GA

Most people doing a thru-hike (the entire length in a single year) go south to north.
3. Where is the northern terminus?

Answer: Mt. Katahdin, ME

Baxter State Park where Katahdin is located closes for the year on Oct. 15, so any thru-hikers must be finished by that time.
4. Where is the Appalachian Trail Conference located?

Answer: Harper's Ferry, WV

This is the headquarters for the AT, and incidentally is about halfway on the trail.
5. Which town is called "the friendliest town on the trail"?

Answer: Damascus, VA

The AT goes right through the middle of Damascus. Although it only has a few hundred residents, each May they host Trail Days in which over 10,000 hikers come to town for fun, food, fellowship and an all-around good time.
6. You join the Half-Gallon Club by consuming 1/2 gallon of what?

Answer: Ice Cream

This is done in southern Pennsylvania to mark the half-way point on the AT. It must be eaten in one setting.
7. There are no shelters of any type along the AT. Only tent camping is allowed.

Answer: False

There are shelters no more than one day's hike apart along the whole AT. Most are three-sided wooden structures. You can also pitch a tent if you wish. Shelters tend to have nocturnal visitors called mice!
8. Which one of these states does the AT NOT go through?

Answer: South Carolina

The AT goes through 13 states with West Virginia having the fewest at two miles and Virginia the most at 531 miles.
9. Is there a charge for hiking the AT?

Answer: Not to hike the AT, but sometimes permits are needed to enter parks, that might have a small cost associated

Sometimes backcountry permits that have a cost attached are needed (Great Smoky Mts. NP, for example) and some shelters in the north charge a small fee. But there is no cost to hike the trail itself.
10. Where does the AT go "over" a river?

Answer: Kennebec River, ME

The official route of the AT crosses the Kennebec. A free canoe ferry is available to hikers wishing to cross.
