Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Achieving Indian statehood in 2000, Chhattisgarh was once part of what other modern-day state of India?

Answer: Madhya Pradesh

The campaigning for Chhattisgarh to achieve statehood arose around the 1920s. These campaigns were not well organised however, and in the 1950s petitions for Chhattisgarh's statehood were declined. By the 1990s however, the movement had gained more prominence and regional strikes in Chhattisgarh were organised. India's Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress voiced support for the cause of those striking.

On November 1 2000, the bill was finally passed to make Chhattisgarh a state separate from Madhya Pradesh.
2. Raipur is the capital city of Chhattisgarh. What river flows just east of the city?

Answer: Mahanadi

The Mahanadi is a large river flowing through the east-central of India. The name "Mahanadi" means "great" (maha) and "river" (nadi) in Sanskrit. It is around 560 miles (900 km) long. Chhattisgarh and neighboring Odisha are the two states the river passes through.

The Mahanadi was infamous for its flooding and resulting human loss of life, hence its nickname "the Sorrow of Odisha." However, these floods have been much more under control since the construction of the Hirakud Dam across the river, which is located around 10 miles (15 km) from the city of Sambalpur, Odisha. It is one of the longest dams in the world at 3 miles (just under 5km) long.
