Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hawaii is also known as what state?

Answer: Aloha state

Aloha means hello in Polynesian.
2. True or false: The largest mountain in the world (from base to tip) is located in Hawaii.

Answer: True

Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are both five times the size of Mt. Everest when you consider that its base is on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean!
3. Pearl Harbor is located on which Hawaiian isle?

Answer: Oahu

Home of the command of the Pacific Fleet, this base was bombed on December 7th, 1941 by the Japanese, drawing the United States into WWII.
4. What's the capital of Hawaii?

Answer: Honolulu

Located on Oahu, Honolulu is a popular tourist destination. There is no record of when the city was founded, but modern science says that the city is standing as a settlement from at least 1100 A.D. Honolulu means 'sheltered harbor' in Polynesian, but this is not the city's first name, which is Kou.

The first foreigner to set foot in Hawaii was the Englishman Cap. William Brown, back in 1794.
5. What's the southernmost point in the Hawaiian Isles?

Answer: Ka Lae

Ka Lae means South Cape in Polynesian. This is the landing point for the first Polynesians to reach the island chain of Hawaii, way back around 500 A.D. This is also the southernmost point of the entire United States.
6. What's the westernmost defined point of the State of Hawaii?

Answer: Kure

The State of Hawaii extends from the island of Hawaii to the Kure atoll. There is no official permanent habitation on any island to the west of Ni'ihau but the islands there are officially part of the State of Hawaii.
7. When the State of Hawaii was formed, Midway was part of the Hawaiian islands.

Answer: False

Midway was at the time under the administration of the American Navy, and was only made a part of the state by American President William J. Clinton, in 1996. President Clinton signed an act giving control of the atoll to the Department of the Interior, under the American Fish and Wildlife Service. In 2006, the island was finally incorporated into the state.
8. What's the highest point in the state of Hawaii?

Answer: Mauna Kea

It towers roughly 4210 meters above sea level.
9. On which island is the wettest point in the world?

Answer: Kauai

Even wetter than Seattle, Mt. Waialeale is the wettest point on Earth. It gets over 460 inches of rain a year! Waialeale means 'rippling water' in Polynesian.
10. Which is the northernmost island of the main Hawaiian isles?

Answer: Kauai

Of the main islands, Kauai is slightly more to the north than Oahu.
