Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lake Tjörnin is a prominent body of water sitting right in the middle of what European capital?

Answer: Reykjavík

A small lake sitting in the center of Reykjavik (which, itself, is close to the North Atlantic Coast), this body of water is home to Reykjavik City Hall. Known for its high number of local birds, it's both a relaxing (albeit chilly) oasis in the nation's capital as well as a conservation spot.

This said, Lake Tjörnin is the site from which many of the country's government buildings, art centres, and museums were built from; they radiate outwards from this location.
2. Which river stretches through Antwerp, Belgium, connecting the city to the North Sea?

Answer: Scheldt

The River Scheldt is a long one, stretching not only through Antwerp but down into Northern France; Antwerp is one of its last stops before heading into the Netherlands and emerging into the North Sea. That makes it a popular shipping route, especially since a canal, built in the 1960s and 1970s, connects it to the Rhine and, thus, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy to the southeast.

It's partly because of this river that Antwerp is such an important Belgian city. After Brussels, it's the most populated; after Rotterdam it's also one of the biggest European ports.
3. What Moroccan city on the west edge of the Strait of Gibraltar is known for its maze-like, port-adjacent Medina quarter?

Answer: Tangier

Found on the Atlantic Coast, the city of Tangier, Morocco is, to a small extent, a starting point of the Mediterranean for people heading east into the sea through the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow waterway that splits it off from the ocean. It makes Tangier a major shipping port and, centuries ago, it made it a strategic trading post in Northwestern Africa. Today it's a beautiful city with a rich history, frequented by tourists looking for both beaches and old-style markets.

Much of the region is heavily influenced by Spain, only a short trip by boat to the north.
4. Saint-Tropez is considered part of what European region?

Answer: The French Riviera

The French Riviera is a major tourist spot in the south of France due to its typically-warm weather, beautiful coasts, azure blue waters, and relaxing beaches. Aside from the town of Saint-Tropez, the region includes several towns along the way to Nice, near the Italian border (including Cannes, Antibes, and the Principality of Monaco). Saint-Tropez, known for its port and citadel, has also been historically prominent in French art and cultural aesthetic.
5. This is the view from Letenské Park overlooking what nation's capital?

Answer: Czech Republic

The largest park space in the city of Prague, Letenské Park is found on Letná Hill next to Prague Castle and overlooks the Vltava River. In the photo provided here, you can see straight down the waterway; Charles Bridge is amongst those found there. In addition to the beautiful panoramic views of Prague that can be seen here, visitors can make stops at a number of artistic monuments and even take a ride on Europe's oldest carousel, the Letná Carousel, which has been in the park since 1894.
6. The Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservancy is found in Wedza District, part of what African nation?

Answer: Zimbabwe

This expansive savannah area is one of a handful of protected ecosystems in Zimbabwe. Found south of the city of Harare in the Wedza District of Mashonaland East Province, Imire is known for its rhino breeding programs and anti-poaching efforts. Though many tourists heading to Zimbabwe might be likely to travel to Victoria Falls on the opposite side of the country, it's Harare, in the northeast, that acts as the nation's capital in the Highveld plateau.
7. This image depicts the skyline of what Middle Eastern capital?

Answer: Manama

Though it may be hard to distinguish, the Bahraini capital city is distinct because it features the twin towers of the Bahrain World Trade Center, built with wind turbines supported between them on sky bridges. This unique building was the first in the world to be built and partially-powered by its own turbines, leading the field in sustainability. Manama has long been a trading hub on the Persian Gulf, but it became an important financial city for the small nation, especially in the 1990s, due to its proximity to oil deposits.
8. Wat Chedi Luang sits directly in the center of what Thai destination's Old City district?

Answer: Chiang Mai

Northern Thailand's largest city, Chiang Mai was founded in the 13th century AD and features a fortified Old City lined with walls and a moat. On the inside and outside of this district you can find temples, wats, and marketplaces peppering the city streets, all sitting in a valley surrounded by Northern Thailand's rainforest-covered mountains. Wat Chedi Luang, right in the middle of the city, is also home to the city pillar, Inthakhin, which was placed there when the city was founded in 1296 AD.
9. The highest point on Hong Kong Island is which of these prominences?

Answer: Victoria Peak

Hong Kong, as a region, is much bigger than just Hong Kong Island, keep in mind. While Victoria Peak (the view from which is depicted) reaches a height of 552m above sea level, it's the twenty-ninth highest point in all of Hong Kong. Tai Mo Shan is actually the highest point in Hong Kong as a whole (at nearly double the elevation). Today, Victoria Peak is a major tourist destination for the city as both an observational lookout and a panoramic photo destination.

It's also home to some of the most expensive homes in the city (and the world).
10. The Golden Gate Bridge is perhaps the most iconic landmark in San Francisco, but the Bay Bridge links it with what adjacent city?

Answer: Oakland

Though known locally as the Bay Bridge, its proper name is the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and it's the next in line in the bay past the Golden Gate Bridge; between the two is Alcatraz Island. Built in the mid-1930s, the Bay Bridge predates the Golden Gate Bridge by six months; both were created to ease up ferry traffic in the bay, especially considering the city's importance as a port.

The bridge stretches nearly four and a half miles from San Francisco across to Yerba Buena Island and then over to Oakland and it has some of the longest spans in the country.
