Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which US state is Mammoth Cave National Park located?

Answer: Kentucky

Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941, and is nearly equal distance between the cities of Louisville and Nashville.
2. Mammoth Cave was so named because of the discovery of a mammoth's skeleton within the historic entrance.

Answer: False

Mammoth Cave was given that name based on descriptions of it in the early 1800s. Its large rooms and length were described as "mammoth", and the name stuck.
3. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world.

Answer: True

More than 365 miles of the cave have been mapped, and they're not through yet. One statistic that I read said that if you laid the second and third longest cave systems end to end, Mammoth Cave would still be the longest by 100 miles!
4. What is the average temperature (in Fahrenheit) inside the caves?

Answer: 54 degrees

Nature's air conditioning! 54 degrees F and humid...a lovely change in the summer from the 90 degree weather outside.
5. How was Mammoth Cave formed?

Answer: it was hollowed out by water dissolving layers of limestone

Geologists have estimated the formation of the cave began around 10 million years ago, as rainwater began seeping through cracks in the ground and formed sinking streams, which eventually became underground rivers.
6. Humans began exploring the caves centuries ago, but it wasn't until white settlers appeared that it became famous. Over the years the caves have been used for many different functions. Which of the following was NOT one of the uses?

Answer: jail

There is no history of the caves ever being used as a jail. However, the cave was used temporarily as a church (in the room now called Methodist Church), a mushroom farm (in Audubon Avenue) and as an entertainment area with dinner for 200 guests (followed by a cave tour).
7. One function of the cave in the early 1800s was as a mine. What important substance was mined here and used during the War of 1812?

Answer: saltpeter

Saltpeter was mined here for use in the production of gunpowder from 1809 to 1819. Remains of the mine can still be seen, due to the preservation qualities of the cave atmosphere.
8. Another use of the cave in the 1800s was as a hospital. In 1841, Dr. John Croghan brought 16 ailing patients with him into the cave, and set up living quarters there. He claimed the cave air would cure them of their illness. Which illness was the good doctor attempting to cure?

Answer: tuberculosis

After the deaths of several of the patients, the experiment was declared a failure and the group left the cave. Remains of some of the group's huts can still be seen there.
9. There is a wide selection of cave tours offered at the park, varying in physical intensity and duration. How many different entrances to the caves are used during the various cave tours?

Answer: 5

The Historic/Natural entrance, the Frozen Niagara entrance, the New Entrance, Violet City Entrance and the Carmichael Entrance are the names of the five tour entrances (and exits).
10. Being centrally located, Mammoth Cave National Park is very popular among Americans living east of the Mississippi. About how many visitors does the park receive each year?

Answer: 2 million

And of these, about 500,000 people take a cave tour yearly.

Thanks to the National Park Service website and the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States for helping me with the facts.
