Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first stop at "Uncle Sam's" expense was a small technical college at the base of the Rocky Mountains, more commonly called the United States Air Force Academy. This prestigious institution lies just north of which city?
2. My next stop on "Uncle Sam's" America tour was America's 7th largest city (2008 figures). Navigating around town was easy using I-10, I-35, and I-37, plus two expressway loops. If you go, make sure you plan to eat at "Mi Tierra", one of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. Can you guess where I was?
3. "Uncle Sam" then arranged for me to take a trip to sunny Florida. While visiting, I was able to catch a professional football game where the home team had a large pirate ship in the stadium. Afterwards, we went over to Ybor City to enjoy some night life. So, where did I go?
4. My next stop on "Uncle Sam's" whirlwind tour of America was a smaller city in the southwest. This city is home to Fort Concho (former home of the Buffalo Soldiers), Lake Nasworthy, and Goodfellow Air Force Base. To which city am I referring?
5. After leaving the southwest, "Uncle Sam" then sent me over to the east coast. This area was full of military installations, including a major ship yard, an amphibious base, two forts, and an Air Force base. It was also close to the first permanent English settlement in the US. Any guesses where I may have had my apartment?
6. The next location "Uncle Sam" sent me was a little obscure, so I'll only ask you to name the state. It was a little town toward the middle of the state that was named after American Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter, also known as "The Fighting Gamecock." Some other geographic locations of this state are Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach. Where was I?
7. For my next trip, "Uncle Sam" played an interesting trick on me, sending me to a place where you can't make left turns while driving (well some of the time). Jug handle and round-about intersections were all over the place here, as was a famous Turnpike highway, the George Washington Bridge, blueberries, cranberries, and "Tony Soprano." In which state was I sent?
8. My next assignment was to Cannon Air Force Base. Cannon is located adjacent to a town started by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1906 and named after the first Christian king of the Franks. This town also claims to have the most number of churches per capita than any other city in the US. When the wind blows just right, you can smell the cattle farms scattered about the area. Do you have any idea what city this is?
9. "Uncle Sam's" next set of orders for we was to a more sub-tropical location, famous for restaurants such as Fudpucker's Beachside Bar & Grill and Maguire's Irish Pub & Brewery. Many of us know about the Emerald City, but would believe this area is called the Emerald Coast? Where was I sent this time?
10. Of course, no US Air Force career is complete without some trip to their version of the Navy's "Fightertown USA". This desert region (with average summer highs in excess of 100°F) had its share of visitors, including Mormons, railway workers, gangsters, and the Rat Pack. It is also home to the "Big Shot", the highest thrill ride in the world. Where was I sent for this fun "working vacation"?
