Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Moab, Utah is about halfway between Canyonlands National Park and this one. Which one is it?

Answer: Arches

Arches National Park has over 2000 sandstone arches, spires, and monoliths, including Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, Devils Garden, and Parade of Elephants. Most of the major sites can be seen by following a 48-mile round-trip road. Accessible from the road are several trails that range from 100 yards to 4.2 miles (most are 1.6 miles or less).
2. If you fly into Jackson, Wyoming, you can rent a vehicle and visit two national parks, Yellowstone and this one. Which park is it?

Answer: Grand Teton

Grand Teton National Park, about 480 square miles, has many roads and trails that lead to lakes, rivers, overlooks, wildlife preserves, historical sites, and other interesting places. The mountains themselves have several faces, depending upon the weather: brilliant, happy, cloudy, glum, and angry, for instance. To find them clear (as in the picture) is not always possible.
3. The General Sherman tree, arguably the "biggest" tree in the world, can be visited in which National Park?

Answer: Sequoia

The General Sherman can be found in the Giant Forest which has five of the ten largest trees in the world. It is nearly 275' tall, girth at ground level is over 102', and its first branch starts at 130'. Apart from the Sherman Tree Trail, the National Park offers many other attractions, including the Tunnel Log, Tokopah Falls, Crescent Meadow, and Moro Rock.
4. In which National Park is Going-To-The-Sun Road?

Answer: Glacier

Visiting Glacier National Park in Montana is best when Going-To-The-Sun Road is open. It often is not, even in the spring/summer/fall. That road gives one close access to most of the wonders of Glacier. The park itself is spectacular! And it is one of the few places where one can not only see but touch a real glacier. Many opportunities exist for hiking, backpacking, and camping.
5. The canyon that makes up Grand Canyon National Park was primarily carved by which river?

Answer: Colorado

The erosion that shaped the Grand Canyon occurred in the past 5-6 million years. Yet there are exposed rocks that date to the Paleozoic Era (525-270 million years ago), and rocks at the bottom of the canyon that are nearly 2 billion years old.
6. This picture is one of dawn on Cadillac Mountain. In which National Park in Maine is it?

Answer: Acadia

Acadia National Park was established in 1916. It covers nearly 50,000 acres on Mt. Desert Island (de-sert, not des-ert). It offers excellent seaside and coastal vistas as well as several inland attractions, trails, and gardens. Much of the park can be seen from a 27-mile loop road which offers a number of stopping areas.

It is best accessed from Bar Harbor, Maine, a place of quaint shops, superb restaurants, and ocean voyages.
7. This picture is of El Capitan. To which national park should you go to see it?

Answer: Yosemite

El Capitan, a popular climbing rock, is possibly the most recognized place in Yosemite. The park, however, offers an almost unlimited range of activities and landscapes. In its almost 1200 square miles, it has thousands of ponds, lakes, and streams, 350 miles of roads, and several hundred hiking trails.
8. This National Park displays over 60 million years of geologic history, beginning about the time dinosaurs disappeared. Where will you find incredibly colored and varied amphitheaters, pillars, spires, and domes?

Answer: Bryce Canyon

An 18-mile road at the top of the canyon offers several spectacular overlooks of spires, hoodoos, and monuments as well as access to a number of hiking trails of various lengths and difficulties. For a different perspective, hike down into the canyon or take a horseback tour to see the formations close up.
9. This canyon is a pleasant diversion in which National Park noted for its geysers and hot springs?

Answer: Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is about 20 miles long, 1500-4000 feet wide, and 800-1200 feet deep. Both the north and south sides are accessible by road, and many incredible views of the canyon and of Upper and Lower Falls are reached by very short walks. Yellowstone National Park, the world's first, is 3472 square miles, larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Located mostly in Wyoming, it does edge into both Montana and Idaho.

In addition to several geyser basins, accessible on boardwalks, Yellowstone is vibrant with fauna and flora.
10. East of Fresno, California in the southern Sierra Nevada are three National Parks. Two are Yosemite and Sequoia. What is the third?

Answer: Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon, about 722 square miles, offers rivers and streams, woodlands and meadows, and the General Grant Grove, over 3100 acres of giant sequoias the largest such grove in the world. It features the General Grant tree, outranked only by the General Sherman tree in Sequoia. Kings Canyon itself is one of the deepest canyons in the United States with a maximum depth of about 8200 feet.
